Study our Financial Mathematics BSc and you could find yourself progressing into a fascinating financial mathematics, finance or banking related career. Graduates from this course could also proceed to PGCE in Secondary Mathematics MSc. You'll learn how to apply mathematical processes in problem solving, developing arguments with appropriate conclusions and an evaluation of their limitations. You'll also formulate complex problems and analyse the results in context. You'll develop these skills through learning activities such as problem solving classes, case studies, data-driven analysis and independent research and study.

All mathematics and computing modules will have presence on the University's virtual learning environment. Apart from standard information such as modules, staff contact details, and the surgery/office hours, it will also, where appropriate, give you access to a system that will allow you to submit your assessment online, marking and feedback; online quizzes, reusable learning objects, e-portfolios and social networking tools.

Later in the course, specific local software will be used such as computer algebra packages (MAPLE), SQL, ORACLE and programming language (eg Python) to enhance your learning. The course is designed to provide students with expertise in a range of mathematical methods and the ability to solve problems. These skills will make you valued in the work place, and assist with future employment, or equip you for further study.

Assessment

You'll be assessed through tests, exams, essays, individual and group research projects, and a final dissertation with regular supportive feedback.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have:

  • At least 80 UCAS points, of which at least 48 must be from a relevant area, from two or more A levels, one of which must be in Mathematics, Science, Physics or Engineering or from a BTEC National Diploma in Science, Engineering or a relevant subject area with at least three merits in the final year, excluding common skills
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/grade 4 or above (or equivalent).

All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS.
