This is an exciting time for higher education in northern Vermont and for the Lyndon and Johnson communities, as we open our doors to the first class of NVU students.

Our location inspires the work that we do here and keeps us grounded and connected to the communities and people that we serve. It is a privilege to work in this setting with dedicated faculty and staff from both campuses as we advance our mission of fostering the intellectual, creative, and personal growth of every student.

While we look ahead to a strong future as NVU, we also remain committed to remembering and honoring our past. From educating graduates who have gone on to be leaders in their communities and professions to contributing to the local and regional economies, our Johnson and Lyndon campuses have been important forces in shaping Vermont, New England, and beyond. As NVU, we will strengthen our position as a leader in higher education through high-impact practices and experiential learning and continue to serve our students and communities well into the future.

While each of our campuses is recognized for specific strengths – Lyndon’s nationally renowned professional programs and Johnson’s national designation as a COPLAC liberal arts campus of distinction— we also share many things in common. Our programs in the arts, the sciences, education, and a range of professions prepare students to advance their careers and serve as responsible and remarkable citizens in their communities.

Learning at NVU takes many forms — in the classroom and in the field, through exhibitions and performances, scientific research and presentations at professional conferences, participating in and producing print and electronic media, and through engagement in service projects and travel. In these and many other ways, the NVU educational experience transforms our students’ lives and prepares them for personal and professional success.

At both campuses, you will find faculty and staff who are deeply committed to student success and to making each student feel a part of an exceptional learning community, instilling in students, whether Badgers or Hornets, a sense of pride and loyalty. Our close-knit campuses thrive with small classes that enable students to build long-lasting relationships with their professors. Our alumni networks are strong and share a rich history of tradition amid creative and innovative accomplishments.

In September 2016, the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees initiated the unification of Johnson State College and Lyndon State College as Northern Vermont University, effective July 1, 2018. The unification positions the campuses — and northern Vermont — to thrive during demographic and higher education changes and to expand opportunities for students through shared resources and collaborative innovation. NVU-Johnson and NVU-Lyndon are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Students now have more options for academic programs, research and hands-on experiences, extracurricular activities, and the high-impact education that prepares them with career-ready skills for a changing world. While NVU is one university, the campuses still have their distinct identities, with separate mascots, athletic teams, and alumni associations.

What brings us North goes beyond four walls, or even our two campuses—it journeys out into the entire world. At Northern Vermont University, you’ll discover study away options near and far that will help you expand your horizons and see the world in a new way.

Students at both NVU-Lyndon and NVU-Johnson can expand their language and cultural knowledge while studying in another state or country. Experience a new culture, explore your academic interests from a new angle, and make connections that will last a lifetime.

At Lyndon, students can work with a number of international study organizations, including AIFS, CIS, KEI, and Globalinks, to identify the program and location that fits. Recently, students have spent a semester or a year in Spain, England, South Africa, Ecuador, Australia, Edinburgh, Ireland, and Italy. Students can also participate in Education First’s language immersion programs during semester and summer breaks in locations like France, Spain, Costa Rica, Italy, Germany, China, and Japan.

No matter what your reason for pursuing continuing education — finishing your degree, advancing your career, or challenging yourself — Northern Vermont University has a continuing education option that’s right for you. You can find a range of courses, programs, locations and modes of delivery (online, in-person, etc.) to meet your needs and fit your schedule.

At NVU, you will enjoy affordable courses that integrate theory with applied experience. All courses are taught by well-qualified faculty who take a personalized approach to students’ learning. In addition, NVU provides academic advising, writer’s workshops and math labs, academic coaching, financial aid information, library access, and other services designed to help non-traditional students excel.

Whether you’re a first-year student, an online student, a graduate student looking to advance in your field, or an alum, Northern Vermont University career services will meet you where you are and help guide you along your path.

Our campus offices can help open doors to high-impact internship opportunities that will prepare you for your future career. From major/minor decisions, resume and cover letter editing, and mock interviews, our mission is to help you navigate to success.
