This course designed to help the delegates develop a more complete understanding of the characteristics of oil and gas reservoirs, from fluid and rock characteristics through reservoir definition, delineation, classification, development, and production.

The intend of this course is to furnish the basic understanding of the behaviors of oil and gas field by providing the tools to characterize the reservoir through the knowledge of various rock/fluid properties, basic geology, and various reservoir drives. Also, how to maximize oil and reserves and select/design the appropriate production mechanism to enhance the bottom line value.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the delegates will be able to:

  • Understand how reservoirs are characterized by fluid type and drive mechanisms
  • Collect and analyze the data needed for reservoir engineering tasks
  • Solve problems associated with identifying and exploiting reserves
  • Understand various methods applied to predict reservoir performance and to enhance recovery w Apply tools for analysis of the underlying uncertainty and assumptions used in many reservoir analysis techniques
  • Understand various processes for solving reservoir engineering problems and analyses
  • Predict reservoir performance and to determine recoverable reserves using different techniques
  • Gain sufficient knowledge about various recovery methods from primary to exotic enhanced recoveries
  • Various reservoir drives and understanding of related reservoir performance.
  • Well production optimization and how to select candidate wells for workovers
  • How to use the well testing tool as an effective reservoir management tool
  • Causes of water production and how reduce/control water production
  • Understand the characteristics of unconventional reservoirs; such as, tight sands, Shale gas, including the new techniques to estimate reserves and production profile

Course Outline

Day 1
Petroleum Geology

  • Origin of the solar system and depositional environments
  • Geologic cycle/time and types of reservoir rocks
  • Main elements of petroleum reservoirs: hydrocarbon migration & traps

Day 2
Rock Properties

  • Porosity types, permeability: relative, absolute, effective
  • Rock wettability and capillary pressure

Fluid Properties

  • Hydrocarbon classifications
  • Fluid behaviors; oil and gas physical properties
  • Fluid sampling and PVT analysis

Day 3
Reservoir Drive Mechanisms

  • Primary, secondary, and tertiary recovery schemes
  • Performance characteristics of different reservoir drive mechanisms

Day 4
Reserves Determination

  • Volumetric, material balance, and probabilistic methods
  • Decline analysis

Well Testing

  • Test objectives (well, reservoir) and types of tests
  • Buildup analysis (skin factor, reservoir press., boundaries)
  • Reservoir limit and gas well testing

Day 5
Water Coning and Water Influx:

  • Time to break-through and critical rate determination
  • Estimate of water influx (steady-state and unsteady-state methods)
