This course has been developed for Midwives and Nurses who work with Mothers and newborn babies. The course will provide you with the up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge, required to care of healthy and high-risk newborn infants in hospitals, clinics and in the community.
Course topics Include
- Initial assessment of the newborn (establishing respiration & Apgar score)
- Physical assessment of the newborn
- Recognising birth trauma & deformities
- Temperature Control
- Feeding and glucose control
- The importance of anticipating and preventing problems in high-risk infants
- Neonatal jaundice
- The baby of a diabetic mother
- Oxygen therapy
- Haemolitic disease
On completion of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe how to differentiate between a normal term infant and a high-risk infant at birth
- Demonstrate competence in bag-mask ventilation on a newborn infant, in a simulated scenario
- Demonstrate competence in assisting breastfeeding mothers during a simulated scenario on infant positioning and attachment to the breast
