Maastricht University (UM) is the most international university in the Netherlands and, with 16,300 students and 4,300 employees, is still growing. The university stands out for its innovative education model, international character and multidisciplinary approach to research and education.

Thanks to its high-quality research and study programmes as well as a strong focus on social engagement, UM has quickly built up a solid reputation. Today it is considered one of the best young universities in the world.

Maastricht University (UM) is a young university in the heart of Europe, with a distinct global perspective and a strong focus on innovative education and research strategies. We see ourselves first and foremost as an open and inclusive academic community, striving for a good mix between Dutch, European and other international students, and addressing European and global issues in our education and research programmes. UM's mission and strategy for the future are built on four core values:

  • To be an innovator in education and research by introducing the CORE philosophy at our university;
  • To adopt an inclusive approach and to open our doors to all students and staff who fit with our profile and subscribe to our values;
  • To take our social responsibility seriously by linking the university to society, from the local to the global level;
  • To be a sustainable institution in the broadest sense.

Maastricht University (UM) is known for its Problem-Based Learning system and international orientation. Our small-scale ‘international classroom’ brings together people from all over the world who have different backgrounds and perspectives. And it’s these very differences that make the UM learning experience unique.

Our study programmes, too, are internationally oriented. They are focused on helping you get the best out of yourself and preparing you as well as possible for your future career, be it here or anywhere else in the world. Indeed, Maastricht is often said to feel like a little piece of ‘abroad’ right here in the Netherlands. Together with the many study-abroad opportunities enjoyed by our students, this makes studying at UM a truly international experience.

The main mission of education at Maastricht University (UM) was, is and will be the integrated academic and professional development of the student. Teaching and learning therefore focus on both the academic and personal development of the student.

We do that by:

  • Striving to be an open and welcoming, truly inclusive university.
  • Training our students to become life-long learners who can define, analyse and solve complex problems, think critically and adapt when faced with complex changes in a regional, national and international context.
  • Creating an international classroom with international topics, teacher from all over the world, and students from highly diverse student population. This cultural diversity provides ample opportunity to develop intercultural skills and gives true dimension to the international classroom, which is a corner stone of UM’s internationalisation strategy.
  • Focussing on employability of our graduates, not only through the acquired knowledge and skills as offered in the curriculum but also by developing specialized career services. It is considered of great importance that students receive sufficient support and are facilitated and well informed on the link between their study programme and the (inter) national labour market.

Maastricht University (UM) is proud of its international study body. A full 51% of our students come from abroad, making UM the most international university in the Netherlands.

The majority of our programmes embrace international themes and are taught either entirely or partly in English. Our academic staff are also highly diverse, with roughly 40% coming from abroad. Further, each year UM welcomes hundreds of foreign exchange students, while almost 40% of our own students participate in study-abroad programmes. Thanks to our many partner universities, Maastricht University puts the world at your feet.

We are working hard to achieve our goal of being a international centre of expertise, and integrated health campus bringing together both knowledge institutions and the business world. Everything here revolves around life and health. FHML is part of the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+), and works closely with the Maastricht academic hospital azM.

At Maastricht University we are committed to developing highly skilled, resilient and employable graduates. We equip them with academic knowledge and with the competencies they need to make the successful transition from university to employment. We support our students in setting goals and making effective plans for their future. We want to ensure that they are able to adapt to change, whether it’s change in employment opportunities, work conditions or society. We also want them to be prepared for the unknown jobs of the future.

We do this by giving students ample opportunity to develop employability competencies. These range from academic expertise and skills to self-awareness, adaptability, social responsibility and life-long learning. Students acquire these skills through our problem-based learning model, our international classroom and our high-quality educational programmes.

The education here is second to none, with dedicated staff who genuinely care about each student's success; I've witnessed remarkable growth in my child that I never thought possible.

Excellent education and highly inspirational environment. Got great foundations for practice here and a great background for my now academic work at Mannheim University and Stanford.
