The Ministry of Education has published a list of foods banned from being sold at all school canteens in UAE.
Nine food categories were identified as having detrimental health effects on students. The list was distributed to schools across the nation on Tuesday.
The list comprises the following items:
The new guidelines were issued in line with global health standards, helping schools mould students’ dietary and nutritional needs.
Educating children and empowering them to make wise food choices is a skill which will translate to a healthier lifestyle that will serve them all their lives.
Diseases resulting from malnutrition, including obesity, anorexia and anemia, are preventable, lifestyle-based choices.
The ministry urged school administrators to inform parents of the new restrictions. They also urged parents to refrain from sending such banned food items to school and adhere to the new food guidelines.
Breakfast should be served at home, before students come to school, according to the ministry statement. The early meal helps students focus and retain more information throughout the day. It also helps prevent Type-2 diabetes and helps in maintaining a healthy digestion.
