The school year in Hungary usually starts on the first working day of September and ends in mid-June. There are four school holidays in Hungary, which include the autumn, winter, spring and summer breaks. Generally, school holidays are centrally determined by the Ministry of National Resources – Education and are similar across all schools in Hungary.

New Year’s Day
New Year’s day is observed on January 1st to mark the start of a new year based on the Gregorian calendar.
Hungarian National Day
Hungarian National Day, also known as 1848 Revolution Memorial Day or Revolution and Independence Day, is observed on March 15th in commemoration of the start of the 1848 revolution against the Austrian Empire.
Good Friday
Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter in celebration of the crucifixion of Jesus which, in addition to Jesus’ resurrection, sets the foundation of Christianity.
Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday is an important day in the Christian calendar. It marks the day Mary Magdalene found the tomb in which Jesus had been buried in, after His crucifixion and death, empty. This day symbolizes the conclusion of the Lent period meaning Christians can indulge in the things they had given up during the period, as assimilation of Jesus’ time in the wilderness.
Easter Monday
Also known as Ducking Monday, or Húsvéthétfő in Hungarian, during this day people appreciate each other by reciting poems in exchange for chocolate eggs.
Labor Day
Also known as May Day or International Workers Day, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st in celebration of the achievements of the labor movement.
Whit Monday
Also known as Pentecost Monday, Whit Monday is observed fifty days after Easter to mark the conclusion of the Easter cycle.
St. Stephen’s Day
St. Stephen’s Day, also known as Foundation Day or Constitution Day, is observed on August 20th in commemoration of the first king of Hungary.
Republic Day
The Hungarian Republic Day is observed on October 23rd in celebration of the 1956 revolution against the Soviet Union and the formation of the Republic of Hungary in 1989.
All Saints’ Day
All Saints’ Day, also known as Feast of Saints, All Hallows’ Day or Hallowmas, is observed on November 1st in celebration of all the Christian saints.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve marks the day before Christmas and is observed on December 24th.
Christmas Day
Christmas Day is observed on December 25th in celebration of the Nativity of Jesus Christ according to the Gregorian calendar.
Boxing Day
Also known as the second day of Christmas, Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26th. In Hungary, citizens enjoy the Christmas festivities until December 27th, also referred to as a bridge holiday which is usually compensated for on December 14th.
