The Government of Gujarat had established the Gujarat Agricultural University in the state vide Gujarat Act, No. 13 of 1969. The Government of Gujarat repealed Gujarat Agricultural University Act, 1969 and promulgated GAUs Act, No. 5 of 2004. Accordingly, Four State Agricultural Universities have been carved out from erstwhile GAU, S. D. Agricultural University being one of them.
The jurisdiction of S. D. Agricultural University is Seven Districts of North Gujarat region viz., Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Patan, Gandhinagar, Kachchh and Aravalli. SDAU is established for the better development of Agriculture and allied sectors in the North Gujarat Agro-climatic Zone. The SDAU is aimed to serve the agricultural interest for the economic development of the farming community of North Gujarat region. S. D. Agricultural University has 8 colleges, 28 Research Stations and 3 KVKs in the jurisdiction.
The Board of Management (BOM) is the apex body of the university, which makes policy decisions, provides guidance for governance, and appoints faculty and staff and controls assets and finances of the university. The Governor of Gujarat is the Chancellor and Chief of the University, whereas the Vice-Chancellor is the Principal executive& Academic Officer of the university and serves as chairman of the BOM, Academic Council and the other important committees. There are 17 official and non-official members in the Board of Management. Other administrators assisting the Vice-Chancellor are the Registrar for general administration, legal, academic matters and the Comptroller for financial management. The undergraduate teaching programmes of various faculties are administered by respective Principal of the College under overall supervision of the Dean & Registrar, whereas postgraduate programmes are administered by Dean, Postgraduate Studies.
The Academic Council at the university level and the Board of Studies at the college level play an effective role in designing new courses, modifying course curricula and other academic matters. The Director Students’ Welfare looks after students’ welfare, extracurricular activities, sports, medical and health care. Research and extension programmes are supervised by the Director of Research and the Director of Extension Education, respectively. The Director of Research is assisted by Additional Director of Research in Agriculture and Coordinators of Research of the respective colleges of the university. An Additional Director of Extension Education assists the Director of Extension Education in training and communication. The maintenance of infrastructure and physical facilities are being looked after by the Executive Engineer.
Director, Students' Welfare is responsible for making arrangements for housing, boarding and welfare of the students and various co-curricular activities other than the academic work. The Director, Students' Welfare provides the program of students counseling and help in the placement of the graduates and post graduates of university. The ultimate objective is to groom the students to become good citizens of country by personality development and skill for better living. One of the aims of S.D. Agricultural University is to impart teaching that provides opportunity for overall development of personality, character and high human values in under-graduate and post-graduate students as well as polytechnic college students of the university. The University provides facilities like hostels, health care, training and placement guidance to the students. The Directorate of Students' Welfare is remaining constant active for the multifaceted development of leadership and discipline among the students through organizing various extracurricular activities like sports, adventures and cultural activities. The campus is availing following facilities for students’ welfare and development.
