The University was established in 2002 by a charter from the federal government on the orders of General Pervez Musharraf, then President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The University is situated against a dramatic backdrop of steep mountains at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers.
The main campus of the university is located in Gilgit, the central town of Gilgit-Baltistan. Gilgit has an airport, providing daily flights to Islamabad, punctuated by adverse weather conditions. The famous Karakoram Highway (KKH) connects Pakistan with China, passing through Gilgit. An offshoot of the KKH connects Gilgit with Skardu (Baltistan).
The Karakoram International University is a leading institution of higher learning committed to social development and evolution of peaceful and pluralistic societies in the mountainous areas of Pakistan and geographically similar regions elsewhere.
To promote human development at all stages of life; through growth, evaluation, synthesis, dissemination and application of knowledge, and provide a service that values sustainable, humanitarian, and economic development of the environment.
The start of the new academic session is an important day in the life of any institution of learning. It is a day joint declaration both the teacher and the taught that together they strive to achieve greater and the greater heights and bring glory both to their institution, the community, and the country.
The Karakoram international University is a new seat of higher education. Like all new enterprises, it too must be facing daunting challenges of growth and consolidation.
The worth of an academic institution lies not in how impressive its buildings are. It lies in how committed and dedicated its faculty and students are. Cheap and unearned degrees are no substitute for the quality education. Our students must be provided quality education to steer their way in life and find a respectable place in this competitive world.
KIU is poised to play its leading role to propel the GB into the knowledge-driven economy for socio-economic development and improving lives of the people. The young minds will be groomed through innovative and creative thinking, which will have the enthusiasm to make difference and stride confidentiality into future and become torchbearers for prosperity, success, and development of the region.

This is the only university in Gilgit baltistan. So far it is upto the expectations of local public, but needs critical improvements in faculty, staff and infrastructure.

I am student of Karakoram International University in the department of Business Management Since 2011. I feel very proud to write this review about the University as i am familiar with it. Under the Supervision of Vice Chancellor Dr. Najma Najam the university development is boosted along with the contribution of hard working faculty.
