Heythrop was established in 1614 in Louvain by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) for the study of philosophy and theology. Since 1970, it has been a College of the University of London, while retaining a modern Catholic ethos, and offers an educational experience that respects all faiths and perspectives.

The College is to close shortly after the end of the 2017/18 academic year. Our focus now is to ensure that Heythrop’s high teaching standards are maintained and that students are given the best possible experience during their time with the College. We will also continue to connect with the wider community and to engage in high quality research, publication and work in the public square, during the course of next academic year.

The College is now, with sadness, working towards closure shortly after the 2017/18 academic year. We will be remaining on our current site until October 2018 but there is no plan for the move of any departments or a continuation of Heythrop College anywhere else. The future development of the Jesuit intellectual apostolate will be something different and will emerge out of discussions the British Province is having, to which we will contribute.

Over the course of the coming academic year, we will continue to connect with the wider community and to engage in high quality research, publication and work in the public square. The College is planning a full programme of events for the coming year, including a major conference next summer, to celebrate Heythrop’s achievements and legacy. We will be providing further details on this in due course.

Our academic departments manage our various undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, whilst maintaining their own research focus and housing our research centres and institutes. During the summer of 2017 our Pastoral and Social Studies department merged with the Theology department.

Heythrop has one of the largest Philosophy Departments in the UK, which together with the Theology Department, offer a personalised teaching that is a special part of our student experience. Our departments' research is supported by one of the oldest and most complete library collections of its kind in Great Britain.

It has been an amazing experience working here. Very supportive and hardworking for the persons with disabilities. The library, the open space, the prestigious teachers and the students are foundations of Heythrop. I will never forget such lovely experience whilst working here..
