We’re a university where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected.

We are determined to do things differently and put student success at the centre of everything we do.

We’re proud to be gold rated in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017 and we're in the top 25 for research quality in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

We're committed to two things: excellence in teaching and excellence in research. We put student success at the heart of our mission, supporting every student from every background to achieve outstanding outcomes; preparing our students to thrive in their future lives.

We are open about our aims and how we want to achieve them. Our strategy sets out our ambitions for 2025. On these pages you'll find more on our plans, our finance, our senior team and how we work.

We will put student success at the heart of our mission, supporting every student from every background to achieve outstanding outcomes; preparing our students to thrive in their future lives and nurturing our community of educators to support and promote student success.

Our research will continue to focus on asking difficult questions, challenging conventional wisdom, tackling with rigour the questions that matter for people and communities and putting ideas into action to improve people’s lives.

In 2025 we will be recognised nationally (top 25 Times Good University Guide) and globally (top 200 Times Higher Education World Rankings) for the quality and impact of our transformational education and for the international excellence and world-leading quality, scale and impact of our research.

We will nurture and celebrate our shared commitment to social action, supporting every person in our University community to realise the potential of their Essex Spirit through their contribution to our shared mission.

We will have grown the University, enabling us to offer transformational education to about 20,000 students, to achieve transformational research through a community of about 1,000 researchers, to extend the knowledge base by investing in new disciplines that meet the needs of our time and to ensure the financial sustainability of the University.

In the heart of Essex, this University has transformed my daughter's academic journey with its stellar education and incredibly supportive faculty; her progress has truly been remarkable!

The reviews here are very suspicious. Essex is not a good university especially for international students. The food is awful. Washers and dryers are very expensive (I paid 15 quid for 2 loads and they weren't even dry, this is a huge problem that the student here have voiced but the university has ignored them). The teachers are not very involved, they give you a bunch of reading and simply tell you to write an essay (very hands off teaching methods). Accommodation is also very poor. When I moved into my room, the mattress had a blood stain and the carpet also had mysterious stains on it. Things are always broken. The front gate was down for over a month and now the lift has been broken for a month. This is bad for those living on the 6th and 7th floors, especially after shopping for grocery. The events sound nice but are poorly put together, resulting in utter disappointment. There are a LOT of events that are "compulsory" in which you need to leave your class early or not even go and many of these events do not even follow the time they set. And least but most importantly, the mental health services are poor. I've been in contact with other students suffering from depression, suicidal even and could not get support. We recently had a student commit suicide (kept under wraps) and nothing has changed. I could list a million more reasons but its just too much to type. I'm thinking of withdrawing soon.

It s an amazing campus to study at while making long lasting friends. I ve spent many years in the Colchester campus and lived in their accommodations. It was truly a great experience that contributed to my self development.

Overall a disappointment. Firstly, the building layout was very complicated and I still don't know how to navigate my way around. Secondly, the food selling shops have poor quality and poor choice of foods. Thirdly, there is little to no leisure facilities on campus so the only things you can really do is study, go to the gym or go home. Fourthly, the societies are quite unorganised and don't really offer a huge amount to do over the year. Finally, the university does have quite a variety of resources for studying but they do absolutely nothing to encourage interaction between new students making it more difficult to make friends.

I loved the University! Unfortunately my course wasn't great, but my course was separate from the University itself. Nevertheless, the university was amazing. Great international environment, exciting student life, open academic support, good access to facilities - including the Gym. It is a awesome community! you will have a blast at this University :)

I transferred here directly from a top 10 university to continue ComSci. The education is equally as fantastic (some modules are even harder to be honest) and has a great atmosphere.

Great University of international students (and not only), slowly but surely entering the UK Top 20. The campus is amazing and the teaching is good too, however, the fact that the University is 45-60 minutes away from the city (by foot) is an important thing to note. Overall though, a good choice for your personal and professional development.

I am a current student in the University of Essex. I am a first year student in the Center for Interdisciplinary studies in the Humanities, doing European Studies with Modern Languages. I love the university experience and I strongly advice students to apply to Essex, you won't regret it!
