The University of Hull has been changing the way people think for 90 years. Our motto, Lampada Ferens, translates as ‘carrying the light of learning’, and over the years, we’ve shared that light with thousands of people from across the world. As England’s 14th-oldest university, we have a proud heritage of academic excellence, and a history of creating and inspiring life-changing research. And we have no plans to stop helping to build a better world.
The University of Hull was founded in 1927 – originally as University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid the following year by the Duke of York (later King George VI, of The King's Speech fame) and we opened for business with 39 students and 14 ‘one-man’ departments. We’ve come a long way since then. The University now has more than 16,000 students and around 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 academic staff.
Our Royal Charter says our mission is to “…advance education, scholarship, knowledge and understanding by teaching and research, for the benefit of individuals and society at large”. We interpret our mission in a modern context with a renewed focus on excellence in learning, teaching, research and enterprise, a transformative student experience and being an internationally-engaged anchor institution for our surrounding regions.
Our vision is for the University of Hull to be recognised for academic excellence that empowers people to shape the future. Our ambitions are bold and challenging – we’ll pursue our vision with a determination to exceed expectations, to contribute ever greater outcomes towards shaping a better world, and to encourage our students to strive for excellence.
We’re committed to providing our students with top-class facilities and an ideal environment in which to live and learn, which is why we’re undergoing a £200-million project to dramatically improve our buildings and facilities. Our new luxury student accommodation, The Courtyard, is now open, with an even bigger, £130-million accommodation complex coming on our west campus soon. Our £28-million health campus, spearheaded by the state-of-the-art Allam Medical Building, opened last September. And we’ve also spent £9.5 million on turning Middleton Hall into one of the region’s best performance venues and cinemas.
The University has particular research expertise in social justice, environmental technologies and maritime history. Our work in healthcare, 3D visualization and nanotechnology is also widely respected. In research terms, we’re perhaps best known for developing liquid-crystal technology. For that breakthrough, we received the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement.
In the 2014 national Research Excellence Framework (REF), 62% of our research was judged to be internationally excellent. We guarantee rooms for new full-time unaccompanied students – with free WiFi, plus utility bills and insurance included in the rent. Choose from halls of residence; shared houses and flats; on campus or off campus; catered or self-catered; big budget or small. There’s something to suit everyone
Your social hub at the University. Whether you just want to grab a bite to eat between lectures or are looking for somewhere to unwind with mates into the early hours, our student's union has you covered. As well as four eateries, it's home to the award winning Asylum nightclub, which has hosted gigs by everyone from The Pigeon Detectives and Tinchy Stryder to Aqua and S Club. And stress-busting bunny cuddling sessions too. Oh yes.
Here at Hull we know that being connected everywhere, anywhere is what you need. There are more than 1,100 open-access computers and 1,600 study spaces around the University for you to use. With our free high speed WiFi network it turns the entire campus into a virtual classroom. That’s a lot of wireless benefitting every hall, house and flat run by the University.
The Skills Team workshops and webinars (online workshops) provide development opportunities for all levels of students at the University of Hull, from foundation and first year undergraduate, through to PhD.
These campus-based workshops provide development opportunities for all our undergraduate students, from foundation level onwards. The workshops cover many essential study skills and ICT skills and are designed to be both informative and interactive. They cover academic reading, writing and presenting as well as helping you use ICT effectively in your studies and/or research. The workshops are designed to be both informative and interactive.
Our webinar series gives you the opportunity to improve your academic skills without having to come onto campus. The advisers will take you through the topic together, giving you the opportunity to ask and answer questions whilst you learn. I graduated from Hull University in July 2016. I loved every minute of my three years there and would recommend it to anyone. As soon as I can afford it I intend to go back and do Masters. The staff are great and friendly. Especially look out for Saran Donkin, Suzanne Clisby, Mick Drake and Mick Wilkinson. These are fantastic staff members who made the whole experience so enjoyable and positive.

I am currently a PhD student at Hull and the environment is wonderful. Staff are very supportive and you can see that the university has created a space specifically designed to accommodate postgraduate students e.g. the Graduate school and a lounge for PhD students in the newly refurbished library. The university has further tried to accommodate students who don't live in Hull through Easter and Summer school PGTS courses which take place in a week of intense study. The university furthermore encourages taking part in conference presentations and has funding allocated for approved expenses related to conference papers. Overall the experience has been excellent!

Unbelievable just happened, so many new courses entries have been opened for 2015/2016 entries, especially for the concentration I am situated in, related to Electronic Engineering. Fantastic Job, The Universities Library is on my top list when it comes to considering the amount of resources and the whole architect of it is just splendid. Next two or three years are definitely going to be well spent and rewarding. Highly Recommended - Engineering Sector.
