  • ThIS provides academic excellence through a high-quality education.
  • ThIS develops values and skills for the world of tomorrow.
  • ThIS inspires action and contributes to the local, national and international communities.

Trondheim International School (ThIS) was founded in Trondheim on 28 April 2004 by Linda Kollien, Hasle Gjerde, Ole-Petter Krabberød and Natasha Amberg. In 2008, ThIS became an authorised school for the International Baccalaureate® (IB) programme administered by the IB organisation, offering both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP). These programmes are offered to children from grade 1 to grade 10 (6 – 16 years old).

ThIS believes that there should be a comprehensive IB education in Trondheim available to all students. The IB programme includes the Primary Years Program, the Middle Years Program and the Diploma Program (offered at the Katedral School). ThIS believes that language learning in a multilingual environment promotes international mindedness, intercultural understanding and language proficiency for global citizenship. We believe that strong competence in one language (mother tongue) supports acquisition of additional languages. The language of instruction is English. All students receive Norwegian each week to facilitate the language development of the host country. ThIS places a great emphasis on home–school cooperation.

ThIS is a publicly funded Norwegian independent school (friskole) and it is operated in line with the Independent School Act (Friskoleloven). The school is funded 85 percent by the state and 15 percent is covered by the school fees. The school is a non-profit organisation and is governed by an elected Board of Directors.

The school is located approximately 1.5 km from the Trondheim city centre and adjoins the beautiful Kristiansten Festning (Fortress) with its abundant parkland where students engage in PE and outdoor activities. Students can explore the outdoors during both the summer and winter seasons.

The school overlooks the beautiful fjord, surrounding mountain ranges, and the central town area including the magnificent Nidaros Cathedral and the colorful buildings and houses lining the edge of the Nidelven River. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the many cultural and academic resources of Trondheim Kommune are located within minutes from the school.
