Istanbul Technical University

Founded in 1773 with the name “Mühendishane-i Bahr-i Hümayun” (Imperial School of Naval Engineering) during the reign of Mustafa III, Istanbul Technical University is a prominent and pioneering university of engineering and architecture with many innovative studies in science, technology, research and development. İTÜ, as a university mainly composed of graduate engineering schools and research laboratories, works closely in collaboration with enterprises and other economic and social partners. Our university facilitates the knowledge and technology transfer to industries, management centers, briefly to all society. To do this, İTÜ has created many Techno-Science parks, incubation centers, entrepreneurship and innovation center and technology transfer office. This way, İTÜ offers a favorable environment for students to build a successful career in their professions, to improve themselves, to seek internship opportunities and to conduct research projects.

The purpose of existence for the Istanbul Technical University is to expand the borders of knowledge and its applications in science, technology and art for contributing to the sustainable community. Our vision is to become a leading, international university through its expertise and creativity in science, technology and art. Our targets are:

• Education targeting change and improvement
• Outcome-oriented, interdisciplinary research to be beneficial for society
• Effective cooperation in international relations
• Versatile, effective and sustainable university – industry cooperation (UIC)
• Strengthening the İTÜ perception in public; a participatory and transparent governance and with increasing own revenue

At İTÜ, in the 1974/75 academic year, two-stage education was provided and with two-year graduate education programs, which were articulated to four-year undergraduate education, high level education was commenced to be provided in many areas of specialization. At present, İTÜ provides training for a large body of student with the graduate and doctorate programs that are undertaken by five different institutes named as Graduate School of Science, Engineering and Technology, Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences, Institute of Energy, Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences and Institute of Informatics. With providing graduate education, İTÜ aims at training young academic member candidates of whom Turkey is in need and fulfilling the requirement of highly trained expert.

Istanbul Technical University’s Faculty of Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Management, and the Turkish Music State Conservatory along with the Social Sciences Institute are all allocated in the Taşkışla, Gümüşsuyu and Maçka buildings located in the city centre. The Rectorate and administrative buildings, in addition to the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Mining, Chemical and Metallurgy, Science & Letters, and Aeronautics & Astronautics are all located on the large main campus, which started to develop in the 1970’s. Institutes that offer post graduate studies are; Nuclear Energy, Life Sciences, Informatics & Eurasia Earth Sciences. The Maritime Faculty joined the structure of the Technical University in 1988 and is spread on 16.5 hectare of land. İTÜ Maslak campus is still experiencing a great advancement. Essential services, such as, library, cultural art association, sports association and nursery has been met. In addition to the Gümüşsuyu Student Dormitory, where many renowned İTÜ alumni have stayed since the 1940’s, new dormitories and staff lodgment are offered to students and academic staff.

At İTÜ GLOBAL, we aim to stimulate a global approach, steering for a global mindset. Under the auspices of our Rectorate, İTÜ GLOBAL has been set up to contribute to the existing international framework, adding a different touch to globalization in higher education. To maintain this goal, as İTÜ GLOBAL, we are involved in the management of İTÜ's internationalization processes and support university-wide policies to develop research and teaching collaborations throughout the world. Additionally, for a sustainable and coherent international flow of information and knowledge, we conduct the coordination and communication with our partners and international networks. Last but not least, an important role of our office is to help students and scholars to realize their pursuits via mobility opportunities we offer in collaboration with approximately 140 partner institutions. With this in mind, İTÜ GLOBAL upholds a strong commitment to take the scientific and technological advancement to further levels with peer institutions at the global scale. İTÜ provides its staff, students and partners with internationally recognized accredited courses. İTÜ GLOBAL seeks a rich variety of collaborative opportunities, which all of our staff and students can benefit. Each of our select partners enrich our international outlook in terms of research and exchange. İTÜ GLOBAL’s role is to enhance existing partnerships and form connections with broader opportunities, which, in return, generate success.
