Radford House was founded in September 1995 in answer to the pressing educational, social and emotional needs of gifted and high-potential learners who were neither understood nor catered for in the schooling systems present in South Afric.

There are many bright young children who are struggling or unhappy in the mainstream education system today because, simply-put, they are a little bit different.

Bright or "gifted" children tend to be highly sensitive souls who abhor repetition and are quickly frustrated by traditional teaching methods. These are people who function on an intense level - whether when questioning a teacher or parent, engaging with peers or assessing themselves. They need, more than most, an environment which has structure, but clear communication and fair application of rules. They crave stimulation, and mentorship. They are born with the ability to reach the stars, but too often have no idea how to get there.

Our dream was to build a school which brought the fun back into the learning process. To nurture the brightest of minds in an environment where there are fewer limits imposed on the children, and where knowledge and thought are embraced as a wonderful opportunity, rather than a chore imposed by parents or legislation.

We employ a system where the primary goal of every lesson is the internalisation of a thinking skill, rather than a mere absorption of fact. Each pupil must be seen and treated as an individual - with unique needs, capacities and interests, and this feat can only truly be accomplished by fostering a close working relationship with the parents and other care-givers.

At Radford House, we believe in the development of the total child, thus we offer a variety of cultural and sporting activities to our learners. We also extend our annual curriculum by offering Elective subjects and Enrichment days.

Our classes are small with a limit of 18 pupils per class. We focus on teaching in a child centered manner, always expecting our learners to push their boundaries and extend their critical thinking skills. We teach according to themes, to integrate knowledge and bring subjects to life. We have an accellerated learning pace which we find keeps the enquiring minds in our charge engaged.

We offer a variety of interesting cultural activities, that do change from time to time, as dictated by demand and skillset. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Chess
  • Debate and Public Speaking
  • Drama and house plays
  • Eisteddfod
  • Glee club
  • Guitar
  • Java programming
  • Lab Rats
  • Languages
  • Philosophy
  • South African Sign Language
  • Yoga

Once per term, the entire school participates in an enrichment day. This can take the form of teachers presenting information on a variety of themes or subjects or an outing that has educational value for the entire student body. Enrichment days give children the opportunity to learn something they may not otherwise have been exposed to. Our enrichment themes have included topics such as Authors, Writing genres, Countries, Olympics, Cultures and Inventions to name a few.

Radford House High School is registered with the Independent Education Board (IEB), the examining body for matric exams. The IEB methodology is in alignment with Radford's approach to education; their tasks and rubrics being a formalised expression of principles which the teachers at Radford High support and use daily.Subjects offered for matric include Life Sciences, Physical Science, Business Studies, Accounting, Dramatic Arts, History and Geography, as well as English HL, Afrikaans and Zulu FAL and Life Orientation.
