Our students are able to take an active part in Edmonton’s many exceptional community resources. Our school facilities include classrooms, a technology center, auditorium, library, music and art classrooms, two performance stages and a full-size gymnasium.

At Progressive Academy we believe that the love of learning and the desire to help make the world a better place resides within each child. We are committed to maintaining a caring and creative environment that:

  • Fosters the natural curiosity to learn
  • Develops learning skills that will assist students to succeed in a constantly changing world
  • Helps students become articulate and effective communicators
  • Assists in the development of time-honoured personal values
  • Helps students gain understanding and appreciation of others
  • Encourages students to analyze information and develop judgment

We emphasize balanced growth – intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially for each of our students. Progressive Academy offers a creative and dynamic full time preschool program for three and four year olds. For many young children this may be their first experience in a school setting. Our safe and engaging environment provides a wealth of opportunity for these enterprising and energetic young learners to expand their interests and acquire information about the world around them.

Literacy and numeracy are the focus of our pre-kindergarten programs at Progressive Academy. Through diverse and engaging experiences we help students expand their math, vocabulary, and language skills. They learn to interact with others, solve problems and work as a team. Wonderful literature and interesting stories are a daily part of life at school.

Throughout the years we have found that three and four year olds love to learn to read and write. Our phonics program, which introduces the 42 sounds of the English language, teaches reading and writing to our students. This enables children to sound out simple three and four letter words before entering the Senior Kindergarten program. They quickly discover that reading adds a whole new aspect to learning.

Preschool students are busy learning all day long. They explore mathematics in their play; music and art classes help them to develop skills of expression and through an introduction to French they learn that language is fun. Each day they have plenty of opportunity to stretch, run and dance. Field trips and guest presenters help add another dimension to our daily activities.

Parents with five year olds recognize in them their insatiable appetite to learn. This thirst for knowledge is what we strive to maintain throughout the child’s education, nurturing their natural curiosity and challenging them to reach their full potential through discovery in the classroom.

Through exploration, dynamic play, carefree creativity and academic instruction our enthusiastic learners develop skills that far exceed the provincial curriculum for kindergarten. With our strong focus in literacy, they learn to read, spell through dictation, develop early dictionary skills, create their first pieces as writers and practice essential research skills.

Our diverse curriculum finds our Senior Kindergarten students gaining a strong foundation in mathematics and logic, French, Mandarin and technology. Our strong focus on the arts finds them being creative in music, visual and performing arts.

Elementary students are so full of life! At Progressive Academy we love directing the vibrancy of each of our students to help them gain the skills that they will need to carry them into a lifetime of learning. As a school accredited by Alberta Education, we use Alberta’s exceptional program of studies. This curriculum provides a broad and balanced framework. We encourage all of our students to work vertically through the curriculum to their full potential.

Students are given many opportunities to explore the world in a number of ways throughout their elementary years at Progressive Academy. Our classrooms are beehives of productivity. A study of our classrooms may find students caring for a worm compost, creating information campaigns for parents to stop idling their cars or running a business to earn money for sports uniforms. When students are engaged in authentic learning and meaningful work they put their whole heart into the task at hand.

Understanding is the true result of reading and study. Students who understand the subjects studied in elementary school have a firm foundation for future learning.

In Language Arts we foster in the student a love of reading and the ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing. We backtrack when needed to help students grasp the earlier skills and we ensure that our students understand grammar so that they can use it to communicate effectively. Our goal in mathematics is to help students truly understand the principles behind the mathematics, and gain such fluency with those concepts that they are able to masterfully solve problems. In addition to core curriculum, student programs include French as a Second Language, Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Physical Education and numerous Technology and Art Electives.

Students are also encouraged to identify topics that spark their interest, to explore these projects through research, and to express their findings creatively. Allowing students to pursue topics of interest often finds them learning far beyond expectations.
