As a leader in all-girls' education and a post-secondary preparatory school, our challenging and enriched curriculum is designed to prepare girls to succeed on whatever path they choose.
Crofton House School was founded in 1898 by Dr. Jessie Gordon. As one of the first women to attend Cambridge University, Jessie placed great value on education for women and had a bold vision of creating an all-girls' school where young women would build a solid foundation to meet life's challenges.
In addition to the emphasis on academics, Jessie established the tradition of a well-rounded education for girls, making sports, physical education, drama and music part of the curriculum. This whole-girl approach continues to be a cornerstone of Crofton House education.
Crofton House School is an independent post-secondary preparatory day school with a rigorous academic program, complemented by strong arts, design technology and athletics programs. We offer girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 a uniquely challenging, supportive and dynamic learning environment. Our enriched curriculum provides each girl a wide array of choices that give her responsibility for her learning as she explores her developing interests and strengths.
Crofton House School’s approach to education, which is tailored to the whole girl – nurturing her social, emotional, physical and intellectual development – is backed by research that girls in single-gender schools are more academically engaged and confident. Our dedicated Crofton House faculty are committed subject specialists and engaged professionals who embrace new ideas in teaching and learning. They are experts in how girls learn, engage and interact, and they are dedicated to making a positive, lasting impact in each girl’s life.
Crofton House prepares girls to be independent learners and thinkers with strong personal values and character. Here, girls are inspired to discover and pursue their personal excellence so that when they go out into the world, the possibilities for their futures are limitless.
Our Junior School girls are enthusiastic and confident students who ask big questions, express their opinions and are excited to explore their ideas. Our youngest learners participate in projects and activities that fill our classrooms and halls with discussion, music and laughter. Amid all of this energy, self-reliant, inquisitive and reflective young thinkers begin to emerge, ready to take on the next challenge.
Each day at our Junior School is filled with wonder and discovery. The fundamentals of education, such as literacy and numeracy, are balanced with the importance of play. Field trips, building a website or racing through the School’s woods spark imaginations. Indoors and out become one inspiring classroom where girls are encouraged to apply their learning to real life.
As there is no ‘typical Crofton House girl’, we offer a wide array of electives and accelerated programs, taught using a personalized approach, allowing each girl to push her own boundaries, discover her strengths and thrive doing what she loves. Designed to complement the way girls learn best, the Senior School offers an intentional approach based on collaboration, curiosity and choice. It is a welcoming environment where learning is both challenging and fun, and girls are free to be themselves.
In Grade 8, girls new to Crofton House join those who are crossing the courtyard from the Junior School to form new friendships. Working with parents, advisors, heads of grade, teachers, specialists - such as a design technician and artist-in-resident, learning strategists, and post-secondary and career counsellors, provide students with a supportive network that encourages each girl to reach her goals and aspirations while tending to her social, emotional, physical and intellectual development and well-being.
Our enriched post-secondary preparatory curriculum meets or exceeds the BC Ministry of Education graduation requirements. It spans humanities, mathematics, sciences, arts and applied skills. Students are required to continue study in the arts, languages and physical education up to Grade 11, resulting in a well-rounded education.
Our signature program, Ivy Compass, goes beyond the curriculum by integrating enriched learning opportunities. Senior School students embrace increasing leadership and responsibility and apply their learning in the workplace, on global trips, in volunteer roles and beyond the classroom. Crofton House graduates continue their learning at post-secondary institutions in Canada, in the United States and around the world. Girls leave CHS with a strong sense of purpose, confident they can do anything.
