We are a Pre-K to Grade 12, not-for-profit independent school in Kelowna, BC, that is committed to growing academic and spiritual disciples of Jesus. Starting in 1986 with only 50 students, we now serve over 350 students in our BC Dogwood program from Daycare-aged children all the way to Grade 12 young adults. We are building a school that:
In our elementary school classrooms, learning happens this same way – through connection. Our staff are committed to building relationships with each child, with each family. We know that it is through relationship that children feel safe to take risks, try new things, and learn new skills.
As passionate followers of Christ, our teachers believe that each student is created for a unique and powerful purpose. It is our joy to get to know your child and see how with every curve of their pencil, drip of paint, and story read in class they begin their journey as life-long learners. It is our aim in Elementary school at HCS to see each child experience and feel welcomed into relationship with God, to fall in love with the world around them, and begin to discover their place in it.
Your child is on a climb. Every page of a book, every conversation, every presentation, every Math problem, every triumph, every mistake, every spelling test is like a rung in a ladder that is lifting them into their future. In our Intermediate classrooms at HCS, the world is opening up and it can feel like time is speeding up; it can feel like that ladder is getting pretty high. During these years, education moves on with depth and rigor, increasing difficulty and mounting expectations, and it also widens with relationship, virtue, and consideration of the world abounding all around. Your child isn’t climbing alone.
At HCS, we are all working together to see your child climb with confidence and peace – this is a beautiful community of partnership. Our students have a team surrounding them, supporting them, so that each step, even those steps backwards, move them towards growth.
Your engine is climbing a big hill and is headed into new and exciting territory. Middle School can feel like a big mountain of change and challenge and the tumultuous terrain of grades 8 – 9 can present a lot of social, physiological, academic, and relational changes. This can be an exciting and also destabilizing time for students and families. Things are NEW, but new is okay. We surround our students with people who support them, guide them, chat and pray with them, and walk alongside them.
At HCS, we LOVE Middle School. These are years of adventure and growth as students are figuring out who they are, who God is, and how they belong in the communities that they are in. Throughout our Middle School program, connection and discovery run as two parallel rails pointed towards an awesome and worthy destination – identity.
Although it can sometimes feel that discovery and connection are pointed in opposite directions, we believe that they must work together so that we can see kids grow wholly into the people God designed them to be. As a staff, we are the cheer-leaders building connection with our students at every switchback and turn, cheering your child on in their ascent – “We know YOU CAN!” We work with families to hold onto our students so that our students can feel free to discover, to risk, to try new things, and to learn about who they are from a place of safety and love. Through all the adventure and through all the discovery, we build step-by-step towards High School. And, we’ll help you hold on and enjoy the Middle School journey with your son or daughter.
Through Grades 10 to 12, we are helping each of our students build the ship that will take them out into the open waters beyond High School. Our classroom content, our Christian curriculum, our programs of adventure and service all act as parts of this great ship. As a staff, we work to equip our students with the skills that will take them into their post-high school vocation and bring their voice to the world. We work to provide them with the anchors that help them navigate the exciting world of adulthood.
