Gill College was founded in 1869 as a university and the beautiful architecture was based on that of the University of Glasgow. The school’s namesake, Dr William Gill who was District Surgeon of Somerset East, passed away in 1863 and left the value of his estate for the establishment of a college of higher education. In 1903, a change in educational regulation caused Gill College to become a high school. Between 1928 and 1965 Gill College was a school just for boys.
Today, Gill College is a proudly South African dual medium high school with boys and girls from all cultures and backgrounds. This unique trademark, together with our hostel facility, quality education, rich traditions and variety of activities, makes us the perfect school to produce balanced, positive and productive young South Africans for the future. Our 100% matric pass rate is just one example of our dedication and perseverance towards excellence.
Our mission is to prepare Gillians to meet the challenges of a dynamic and changing world. Gill College builds on its heritage, diversity, and values, developing the qualities and strengths of each young Gillian; it engages with the needs and interests of society and with the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
Our objective is to prepare our students holistically so that they can take their place with confidence and succeed in the contemporary world. We strive to provide them with opportunities to serve their fellow-men, to lead to the best of their abilities, and to live up to the five Gill values, i.e. respect, integrity, neatness and work ethics. We are of firm belief that Gill College is the foundation on which all its students are building their futures.
Gill College is an academic institution that has a very proud tradition of outstanding matric results. Our academic goals are dominated by the principle of 100% pass rate which is regularly achieved with exceptional bachelor passes. The latter is due to the dedicated teachers who are committed to working hard with the students from inception in Grade 8.
Although the academic programme is the central pillar of the school, we strongly encourage involvement in the many and varied extra-curricular activities the school has to offer. The skills learnt in the cultural and sporting spheres of the school are critical in the well-rounded growth and maturity of all our students. Although Gill College is small in number it has a strong tradition of delivering the best rugby, netball and hockey players.
At Gill College every child matters, we believe that every child is a winner and we strive to ensure that they recognise their full potential.
