The University of Toledo is one of 14 state universities in Ohio. We were established in 1872 and became a member of the state university system in 1967. The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio merged July 2006 to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state. The University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission.

Main Campus features nine modern residence halls, a gothic bell tower, a Student Recreation Center, a state-of-the-art classroom center in one of our original buildings, Memorial Field House, opened fall 2008, and a football stadium and new Savage Hall basketball and athletic complex, which opened fall 2008.

Health Science Campus is home to graduate health programs and the UT Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, offering innovative treatments for strokes and cancer found nowhere else in the state. The UT Medical Center, also features the new $5.8-million Orthopaedics Center.

At UT, we have researchers working at all levels — from undergraduates to faculty — toward our mission of improving the human condition. In fact, their combined, efforts have led to 125 patents and nearly $60 million in funding and grants. The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio merged July 1, 2006, to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state.House Bill 478 was signed on March 31, 2006, by Gov. Bob Taft, creating a university built around eleven academic colleges and professional programs matched only by a handful of public universities nationwide, including Ohio State University and the University of Michigan.

UT's main campus, located along the banks of the Ottawa River in a residential section of the city, includes historic buildings, modern facilities, contemporary residence halls and lots of green space.The University of Toledo Health Science Campus is home to UT Medical Center hospitals and clinics and many of UT's health-science research and education programs that are teaching the next generation of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

UT has identified areas of research excellence in which highly accomplished faculty members are recognized nationally for their contributions to the fields of: Astronomy and Astrophysics; Solar Energy, Water Quality and Sustainable Technologies; and Cell Architecture and Dynamics.

The identification of these areas of research excellence and a plan to advance them is part of the University’s strategic plan. As part of the process to identify existing strong research programs, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs also recognized spotlight areas of unique distinction, areas of emerging research excellence, and areas of future opportunity. UT will continually consider new areas and update existing areas of excellence.
