Heidelberg College was founded in 1850 by members of the German Reformed Church who named it after the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563. Seeking to minister to the German population of Ohio, the Revs. Reuben and Jeremiah H. Good established a church-affiliated institution staffed by a largely theologically trained faculty.

The college opened its doors in a room on the third floor of what was known as "Commercial Row" in downtown Tiffin, Ohio. Five students were enrolled for the first classes, but 149 were listed on the roster by the end of the first year. The Heidelberg campus is as unique and honored as its nationally recognized academic programs. The collage of historic and contemporary architectural styles on the tree-lined campus reflects the diversity of students, staff and faculty who have graced Heidelberg's halls for more than 160 years.

In 2009, Heidelberg College became Heidelberg University. The name was changed to reflect more appropriately the academic offerings of the school. Heidelberg has been continuously accredited by the North Central Accrediting Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools since that organization was founded in 1913. Heidelberg offers students a strong liberal arts education with professional development opportunities. Research, professional growth and leadership are emphasized through the programming and curriculum.

Heidelberg College is an exceptional institution of higher learning. The faculty is brilliant, as many are distinguished authors in their selective fields. The campus is by far one of the most articulate in the state. The student body as a whole is friendly and engaged. Heidelberg also has numerous predominant alumni. If you plan to attend graduate school, medical school, or law school your options are unlimited as a Heidelberg degree carries heavy merit.

Heidelberg College was unequivocally the best experience of my life. the Berg is a school that you have freedom; if you get involved in the community, classroom and extracurriculars you will get the full experience and love every second of it. there is truly a place for EVERYONE. I was in a sorority, got involved with the TV station, an honorary, speech team, newspaper and other activities. It was a very fulfilling four years. Most all professors are doctors and can give you advice personally, professionally and academically. All of my professors had my best interest in mind, a perk you will not receive at a big school. Tiffin isn't the greatest town and is overall lower class but is safe. the town and school are what you make it, if you have a good attitude and want to get the most out of your money and education you will certainly have no trouble at Heidelberg. Whenever I reflect the memories I had at the Berg I remember the best moments of my life with friends I still talk to everyday.
