Chemistry / Physics: Fully Funded European Research Council PhD Scholarship: Controlling and Studying Rotational Quantum States of Molecules during Molecule-Surface Collisions

The surface dynamics group in Swansea University is home to a unique molecular beam apparatus which uses magnetic field manipulations to control and measure the rotational quantum state of a molecule as it collides with a surface, experiments which are impossible to perform using any other existing technique. Following our proof of principle demonstrations, we are now applying this new technique to study the interaction of various small molecules with metallic and insulating surfaces. The PhD project, which is part of our 5-year ERC consolidator research project “rotational waves”, will include aspects of designing parts of an experimental instrument, performing ultra-sensitive surface science measurements and designing and implementing data analysis techniques.

The research activities are along the interface between physics and chemistry (physical chemistry). Excellent applicants from either or both of these disciplines are encouraged to apply.

This scholarship is open to candidates of any nationality, however funding details for international students are to be confirmed.

Benefits
This three-year scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £20,000.

Funding details for international students are to be confirmed.

How to Apply
To apply, please complete and return the following documents to the College of Science:

  • College of Science PGR Scholarship Application
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Monitoring Form_Ffurflen Monitro
  • Academic References – all scholarship applications require two supporting references to be submitted. Please ensure that your chosen referees are aware of the funding deadline, as their references form a vital part of the evaluation process. Please either include these with your scholarship application or ask your referees to send them directly to science-scholarships@swansea.ac.uk
  • Academic Transcripts and Degree Certificates – academic transcripts and degree certificates must be submitted along with the scholarship application by the funding deadline. We will be using these to verify your academic qualifications.
  • A recent CV
  • Candidates should use the ‘Supplementary Personal Statement’ section of the application form to explain why the award they are applying for particularly matches their skills and experience and how they would choose to develop the project.

Please email the documents to science-scholarships@swansea.ac.uk with 'ERC 1 PHD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION' in the subject line of your email.

Informal enquiries before the deadline for formal applications are welcome by emailing Professor Gil Alexandrowicz (g.n.alexandrowicz@swansea.ac.uk).

Eligibility

Candidates must have a first, upper second class honours or a Master’s degree with Merit, in Physics or Chemistry or closely related discipline.

For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests. We prefer candidates to have already met the English Language requirements at the point of application, although this is not a requirement.

About Company

Swansea University has been at the cutting edge of research and innovation since 1920. We have a long history of working with business and industry but today our world-class research has a much wider impact across the health, wealth, culture, and well-being of our society.

We have achieved an extraordinary level of success in recent years and our research activity exceeds that of many larger universities yet this has not compromised the friendly and relaxed atmosphere that has always characterised the “Swansea experience”. In our Centenary year, we look forward to continuing to work together to improve lives and the bright future that the next century will bring.

Swansea University spans two stunning campuses at each end of Swansea’s waterfront. Singleton Park Campus is set in mature parkland and botanical gardens, overlooking Swansea Bay beach. Bay Campus is located on the beach on the eastern approach into Swansea.

Our multicultural dual-campus provides lots of opportunities for students, staff and the community and the friendly and relaxed atmosphere is often characterised as the “Swansea experience”.
