The Ministry of Education is seeking to hire teachers to work at some of the UAE’s government schools.

While many sectors have seen hiring freezes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministry has posted job listings for teachers of kindergarten, chemistry, Chinese and mathematics among other subjects.

The location for the positions were not revealed in the job postings and selected candidates could be asked to work at a public school in any emirate.

Teachers who wish to apply have been asked to do so through the jobs list on the ministry’s website.

Last week, the ministry warned teachers of fake job vacancies that were being shared on social media.

Schools and universities across the country closed their campuses in early March to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Pupils and students were instead provided with e-learning programmes.

A month later, private schoolteachers in the UAE told The National they were forced to resign and pressured to accept lower salaries or unpaid leave due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Some private schoolteachers said they had no option but to quit work after being asked to take long-term unpaid leave with no guarantee of a job to return to. Others said they had been informed of a cut in salary of up to 80 per cent just days before being paid, with some of the reductions continuing for the foreseeable future.

Nursery teachers in the Emirates also said they were struggling to make ends meet because of closures due to the coronavirus.

Staff said they had been made redundant or were not paid after classrooms were shut on March 1.

Many toddlers attending nurseries or kindergartens are too young to benefit from online learning, meaning nurseries had no need for teachers.

Last year, The National reported that the Ministry of Education was running an initiative to improve standards at public schools.

The UAE had also launched a major drive to hire Indian teachers to work at government schools.

Hundreds of candidates attended open days in Mumbai and Delhi, where teachers took examinations and appeared for interviews.
