Accommodation Scholarship for The John Flynn College

The Peter Crossman Scholarship is established as a bursary to assist James Cook University students who reside at The John Flynn College. In 2020 a single scholarship is valued at $7000, or 50% of the annual residential accommodation fee for a standard room.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide students from diverse backgrounds (who may not have the capacity to pay full college fees) with the opportunity to reside at The John Flynn College. Recipients must demonstrate academic excellence in their studies and a commitment to the wider community. Recipients are eligible to apply for the same scholarship in years two and three of their college residency. The John Flynn College plans to have three Peter Crossman Scholarship awardees as members of the College from 2021.

What would I receive?
If you are the successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive $7,000 paid in two equal instalments after Census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2. Payment will be made by crediting your John Flynn College account.

How do I apply?
Prior to completing an application, you should carefully read the Scholarship Rules below. Applicants wanting to apply for this scholarship must attach the following documents to their application, as well as those documents indicated in the application:

  • A personal statement of no more than two pages addressing the eligibility criteria.
  • A copy of your birth certificate, passport or permanent visa.
  • A character reference from a person other than a family member, demonstrating my contribution to the wider community and my ability to uphold the values of the College.
  • Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in assessing the merit of the application.

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you answer all the questions and include all relevant documents. Your application and relevant documents must be submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

What happens now?
Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation after it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Nature of the Scholarship

Selection Criteria
The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

  • The applicant's academic merit;
  • The extent of the applicant's educational, social and/or financial disadvantage;
  • Content of the written statement;
  • The character of the candidate for the award; and
  • Any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate.

Application Procedures
Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the close date in the year in which the scholarship is to be awarded.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • A personal statement of no more than two pages addressing the eligibility criteria.
  • A copy of their birth certificate, passport or permanent visa.
  • A character reference from a person other than a family member, demonstrating the applicant's contribution to the wider community and their ability to uphold the values of the College.
  • Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in assessing the merit of the application.

Selection Process
The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee.

The Selection Committee shall comprise:

  • The College Council Chair
  • College Principal (Chair of Selection Committee)
  • A member of the College Council

Payment
The successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive $7,000 paid in two equal instalments after Census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2. Payment will be made by crediting their John Flynn College account.

Conditions of the Scholarship
Payment will be made by crediting the recipient’s John Flynn College account. 50% of the scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s account at the beginning of study period 1 and the remainder will be credited to the recipient’s account at the beginning of study period 2.

Payment will not be made for a scholarship if the recipient does not confirm acceptance within 7 days of being notified of the scholarship. If the recipient does not confirm acceptance within 7 days, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the scholarship.

A scholarship may be terminated by the College Principal if the recipient:

  • Fails to confirm acceptance of the scholarship within 7 days of being notified of the scholarship; or
  • Ceases to meet the eligibility criteria; or
  • Is suspended or excluded from their course of study; or
  • Is suspended or excluded from residency at The John Flynn College
  • Is found to have provided false or misleading information in relation to the scholarship

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

A recipient cannot defer or request suspension of their scholarship payments. A recipient cannot be the recipient of more than one scholarship issued by The John Flynn College.

Administration of the Scholarship
The Scholarship is owned by The John Flynn College and all administration is managed by the College directly. For further information or to submit an application, please contact via email.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Peter Crossman Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Bean Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
  • Be enrolled full time (at least 9 credit points per semester) at James Cook University in their first year of enrolment in an undergraduate bachelor or diploma course as at the census date for study period 1 and 2; and
  • Have not previously completed a bachelor degree
  • Demonstrate that their home is so far from James Cook University Townsville that daily travel for full-time internal study is impracticable
  • Demonstrate academic excellence in their previous studies
  • Demonstrate educational, social and/or financial disadvantage
  • Demonstrate contribution to the wider community, through activities such as community service and participation in academics, arts, music, culture or sports; and
  • Demonstrate their ability to uphold the values of the College.

Ongoing eligibility

The recipient may be eligible for the same scholarship in years two and three of their residency at the John Flynn College providing the recipient:

  • Submits the required form by the due date each year
  • Continues to meet the eligibility criteria
  • Maintains a satisfactory Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Obtains the express endorsement from the College Principal of the applicant's ability to uphold the College values
