In Dubai, the governments both at federal level and local level have declared that the future is going to be smart cities on Block Chain platform, disruptive technologies and disruptive innovation. Hence, it is expected that the employers will start to revise the skills they hire and the market will start to see new categories of jobs to serve this transformation. Market research indicates that any graduate with knowledge about Blockchain in an innovation context gets multiple job offers.

The objective of the programme is to provide high calibre innovation management graduates with an in-depth understanding of creative, strategic, tactical and operational issues of innovation management on a global scale. This will also provide experience across a wide range of industries including manufacturing, service, public and the third sectors. On completion of the degree, the participants will be well equipped with state-of-the-art knowledge of the concepts, methods, tools and techniques to enable them to contribute towards the competitiveness of their organisations.

Students also have the opportunity to take part in team-building and leadership events during the first few weeks of the programme.

Accreditation

The Dubai Campus is accredited by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and fully licensed to teach its degrees in Dubai. All graduates receive a British degree that is accredited by Royal Charter in the UK.

Managing Disruptive Innovations

Semester 1 (mandatory)

Introduces the concept of disruptive innovation in an applied business context. Helps students to develop understanding of the key models, tools and skills required to manage innovation. Explicates the relationship between disruptive innovation and sustainable business models that support lean start-ups and eco-innovation. Students will be able to conduct a reflective analysis covering a range of case studies of disruptive innovation from various sectors.

Sustainable Business Model Innovation

Semester 1 (mandatory)

Sustainable Business Models (SBMs) build on the triple bottom line approach, a that defines SBMs purpose and help measure their performance along these three dimensions. This course explicates the conventional business model theory, including Business Model Canvas then aims to help students understand the concept of eco-innovation in the context of business models; understand the building blocks of the Lean Startup (LS) methodology and how to apply Lean Startup (LS) to create sustainable business models in a practical context.

Data Analytics for Innovation

Semester 2 (mandatory)

This course introduces students to foundational skills in data analytics. Students will explore topics that form the backbone of modern data analytics such as machine learning, data mining, artificial intelligence and visualization. Tools will be introduced to students for how to go from raw data to a deeper understanding of the patterns and structures within the data, to support making predictions and decision making.

Research Philosophy and Practice

Semester 2 (mandatory)

Provides an understanding of the social science research process, as well as theory and approaches to research. Develops practical skills (i.e. quantitative and qualitative techniques) in data analysis to transform the raw data into information that guides marketing management valuations.

About the instructor

Programme leader

Dr. Mohamed Salama is the Academic Head of Strategy, Operations and Projects in the School of Social Sciences at Heriot Watt University.

Dr. Salama has over 30 years of professional and academic Experience. He started as an Entrepreneur in the late 80’s in the field of construction management and Building Equipment International Trade. Mohamed has circa 20 years of academic experience with focus on Sustainability, Disruptive Technologies, Sustainable Project Management, Strategic management, operations management, economics and negotiation.

He is the Programme Director of a suite of Masters programmes that include Strategic Project Management, Business Strategy Leadership and Change and Operations Management.

He has published two textbooks; Project Management and Principles of Sustainable Project Management. The latter presents a novel applied approach to sustainability, innovation and technologies in a project management context.

Dr. Salama sits on the scientific committees of a number of international conferences and journals, and he is currently the Academic Chair of “Lean and Agile Middle East Summit”. He is regularly invited as a speaker in the area of sustainability and innovation strategies, and as a panelist for startup projects.
