Emirati students have come up with 50 innovative ideas on sustainability and conserving the environment for the next 50 years. The youngsters presented their ideas during a virtual workshop organised by the Ministry of Education (MoE) as part of the 50×50 initiative, which aims to involve school students in the ‘Designing the Next 50’ project.

The ‘Designing the Next 50’ project was recently launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to involve the public in shaping the future of the UAE.

Fifty students from the Zayed Educational Complex in Sharjah participated in the virtual MoE workshop.

The students’ innovative ideas ranged from providing practical solutions to practices that harm the environment to investing in renewable and clean energy, and expanding recycling programmes to the national level.

One idea proposed changing the pattern of energy consumption by individuals and institutions, and motivating them to contribute to energy production. This would be done by giving them devices capable of converting kinetic energy into electrical energy. Another idea was increasing green spaces in the country.

The youngsters also presented designs that can help raise awareness among individuals on reducing their daily energy consumption; the use of robots in cleaning up sea beds; and hydroponics and expansion of organic farming.

The ideas presented by students can be applied by individuals and institutions or could be adapted by the government in planning for environmental sustainability.

The ‘Next 50’ design project is overseen by the 50-year Development Plan Committee, chaired by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, to shape the UAE’s next 50 years.

The MoE’s 50×50 initiative will see about 50,000 students from over 1,200 public and private schools take part in 1,000 virtual interactive workshops.
