Navigating the stressful exam season: practical tips for parents, students and educators By Ian Pugh, Principal of Al Ain British Academy, Aldar Academies
The exam season can be a stressful and daunting time for families. Parents may find it challenging to strike a balance between providing the necessary guidance for their children and creating a supportive, calm environment at home. Students also feel the pressure of how exam results will impact their future education and career prospects. With the right mindset and strategies, parents, students, and educators can effectively and smoothly manage this critical period.
Parents can facilitate the exam journey in three ways.
First, engage in discussions to pinpoint the areas where your young one requires the most support. This approach places them at the center of the solution-finding process, allowing them to express their needs and concerns.
Second, offer words of encouragement to boost their confidence and help them overcome exam-related anxieties. Believing in their capabilities and reminding them of their strengths is critical during this time.
Third, adjust the family’s daily routine to accommodate their study timetable, creating a conducive environment for focused learning. This involves adapting mealtimes, creating quiet study spaces, and providing opportunities for unwinding.

Educators also have a key role to play in shaping the exam experience through exemplifying calmness and offering additional support. The dedication and commitment of Al Ain British Academy’s educators is truly inspiring. Our teachers are going the extra mile by offering supplementary revision sessions, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their exams.
Students can optimise their exam preparation by establishing a well-defined schedule for revision and study sessions, factoring in time for relaxing. This approach helps create a balanced routine and ensures that students allocate sufficient time to focus on their academic endeavors while also prioritising their well-being.
Additionally, I encourage students to engage in self-evaluation. While it may be tempting to focus on topics they are already confident in, it is important to self-assess and seek guidance from teachers regarding challenging areas. These are the key areas to prioritise during the revision phase.
Last but not least, consistency and persistence are key for success. This is how our graduate, Maya Nourse-Grewal, scored the highest A-level History score in the world and the highest grade in the Middle East for A-Level Geography and English in 2022.
By nurturing open communication, empathy, and understanding, families can navigate the exam season together, supporting their children through this critical period and helping them achieve their best possible outcomes.
