How to prepare your children for a smooth return to school By Chris Nourse

As the summer break draws to a close, the anticipation of a new school year fills the air. The excitement of reuniting with friends, meeting new teachers, and embarking on new learning adventures is profound. However, transitioning from the relaxed pace of summer to the structured routine of school can sometimes be daunting for students and families. That’s where parents play a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless re-entry process.

Here’s how parents can contribute to their children’s successful return to school.

Re-establishing School Friendly Routines

Before the first bell rings, it’s important to ease children back into a routine that supports their learning and overall well-being. An ideal routine can vary based on a child’s age, but some fundamental principles remain constant.

First, adjust bedtimes a few days prior to school starting to ensure they get 8-10 hours of sleep, and are well-rested and ready to absorb knowledge.

Second, turn off screens at least an hour before bedtime to promote quality sleep. Incorporating a reading session before sleep would also aid relaxation and cultivate a love for learning.

Third, encourage healthy habits like having a nutritious breakfast and engaging in creative activities away from screens to help set a positive tone for the day.

Fostering School-Community Engagement

Active participation and collaboration within the school community go a long way in ensuring a seamless re-entry process for students.

Engaging with induction activities, holding back-to-school conversations at home, and preparing essentials like uniforms and school supplies can instil a sense of excitement and preparedness.

Additionally, attending “meet the teacher” sessions can also help reduce any back-to-school anxiety by establishing a connection between the child’s home and school life.

Ensuring a Successful Transition

During the initial week of school, parents should be attuned to their child’s behaviour and emotions.

An active child who eagerly shares their experiences from school over a meal is likely transitioning well.

However, if a child appears withdrawn, quiet, or unsettled, they might be facing difficulties adapting. In such cases, reaching out to the teacher for support can be valuable.

Open communication ensures that the school is doing its part to facilitate a smooth transition, and together, parents and educators can provide the necessary support.

As we gear up for another productive academic year, the role of parents in preparing their children for a successful return to school cannot be overstated.

However, educators also play a key role in shaping the back-to-school experience through a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment, regular communication with parents and additional support to students facing difficulties.

Our educators at Yas American Academy work hand in hand with parents to provide a nurturing environment that sets the stage for growth, learning, and achievement. Their dedication and commitment is truly inspiring.
