Tokyo West International School, we believe that each and every individual has unique talents, interests, dreams, and aspirations waiting to be discovered and nurtured. As an authorized IB PYP school, we “aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” (IBO, 2024). We are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students learn and grow.
Our motto is Grow Local, Soar Global. Through the quality of education that we provide, we “nurture our students’ growth and passions with locally relevant hands-on education that crosses cultural, digital, and analog boundaries. We help our students develop a strong sense of self and curiosity to soar to greater heights and possibilities as global citizens.”
This year, we are getting ready for our upcoming Cognia re-accreditation. We also have started our preparations for the PYP evaluation. With the help of all our stakeholders and their continuous support, we would be able to take our school to the highest level of excellence.
TWIS nurtures our students’ growth and passions through locally relevant, hands-on education that crosses cultural, digital, and analog boundaries. TWIS students develop a strong sense of self and curiosity to soar to greater heights and possibilities as global citizens.
Since our start in April 2010, we have always worked towards the goal of “developing human resources who can play an active role on the international stage while realizing their dreams.”
Our school’s goal is to further enhance learning from the current preschool to middle school, and to create a new high school to realize integrated education.
Our school will establish a high school this year in 2024, and with an eye on future careers, we have begun building an educational curriculum that will allow students entering the university of their choice, whether in Japan or overseas.
The uniqueness of our high school is something that cannot be found anywhere else. We would be happy if as many students as possible could enjoy learning in this unique environment.
It’s characteristics are as follows.
Through our cooperative system with major correspondence high schools in Japan and the United States, high school students can choose either correspondence course. Alternatively, you can choose both courses and earn both Japanese and American high school diplomas.
If you choose an American correspondence course, as long as you meet the required graduation credits, you will be considered to have completed the high school course in at least one year, and you will also be eligible for Japanese common tests and university entrance exams (of course, overseas universities as well) is given. This is something that is not possible at high schools in Japan or international schools, and it allows students to skip grades and go on to university.
Examples of students from our partner AJ International Academy accepted by American Universities this year includes
We will establish a career center to support parents and other students regarding career paths and further education in order to become the person they want to be in the future. We also plan to actively promote internship programs for companies.
In recent years, many international courses have been established in Japanese high schools, but due to the constraints of the Japanese educational system, most subjects other than English are taught in Japanese, and it is difficult for students to acquire truly usable English. We hear many voices. Of course, most of the classes are conducted in Japanese, which can be difficult for native English speakers, and it is not uncommon for classes to consist of mostly Japanese students, except for the teachers.
Tutors will individually support students’ learning and writing reports based on each student’s needs. When preparing for university entrance exams, we will provide total support from studying the subjects to be tested to submitting your application.
A major difference from correspondence high schools is that students can enjoy their school life by participating in cultural activities such as physical education, music, art, garden projects, and club activities on site.
On site English classes will further develop our strength by focusing on the fundamentals of research, English composition and literary analysis, as well as on additional aspects such as media, linguistics and creative writing.
You can also choose special classes to improve your Eiken, TOEFL, and IELTS scores.
