Kunimoto Alberta International School (KAIS) is a 6-year,all-girls school, located in Tokyo, Japan. KAIS was established in April 2020, as a brand-new program within Kunimoto Gakuen, offering both the Alberta curriculum and Japanese local curriculum starting from Grade 7. By incorporating the internationally-renowned Alberta curriculum into our program, students will not only be able to have students develop excellent English language skills, but will have unlimited opportunities to know about the world, connect with people and places from around the globe, and understand the depth of diversity and multiculturalism.
Alberta’s leading education program is recognized worldwide. In OECD’s Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Alberta has consistently outperformed other countries and its neighboring provinces. According to 2015 PISA results, Alberta ranked 2nd in the world (1st in Canada) for science (Japan ranks 7th). Canada outranked even Singapore, which is ranked top in the world for their overall score, in science while also ranking 2nd in Canada for reading.
Japan is currently in the middle of the greatest educational reform since the war. University entrance exams will be changed in 2020, and junior and senior high school teaching guidelines are being re-examined in order to better prepare students for the fast-paced changes in technology and globalization that our society is currently undergoing. Canada has already been implementing such reforms in each of its provinces since the 1990s.
Numerous aspects of the three E’s (Engaged Thinker, Ethical Citizen and Entrepreneurial Spirit) instilled by Alberta Education as part of their education vision in 2010 overlap with the educational reform that the Japanese Ministry of Education is aiming to complete by the year 2020. Having started this reform ten years ahead of Japan by incorporating active learning and STEAM education into their curriculum, it is a true testament to how accomplished and cutting-edge Alberta’s education really is.
Earning a high school diploma from Alberta is acclaimed in both North America and internationally. Graduates have earned a spot at in-province universities, such as the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, along with other prestigious institutions in Canada and around the world.
Our Mission
The founder, Haruki Ariki, focused on human education to nurture emotions, and at the same time, one of the educational principles was to foster women who can contribute to the global society. Under these circumstances, we aim to educate girls in a new era by combining the education of girls who nurture the rich emotions of our school with the education program of Alberta, while inheriting the spirit of founding.
