How ISC Dubai Prepares Students for Success in a Rapidly Changing World

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Mr. Hisham Hassan, the esteemed Principal of the International School of Choueifat (ISC) Dubai, to gain insights into the school’s vision, academic priorities, and plans for the future. With a wealth of experience in education and a commitment to academic excellence, Mr. Hassan shared his perspectives on the evolving landscape of education and the strategies ISC Dubai employs to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

At ISC Dubai, our plans for 2025 revolve around embracing a none-selective admission policy, academically rigorous, and future-ready environment that aligns with the SABIS® vision of delivering high-quality education at a reasonable cost. With a student body of nearly 4,000 from 86 nationalities, we are a hub of diversity and innovation. Our goals include:

  • Enhancing Academic Excellence:

We aim to elevate our rigorous academic standards through the SABIS® Integrated Learning System (ILS), and other innovative methodologies that empower our students to achieve their full potential while fostering independence in learning. We recognize that continuous learning beyond university education is vital for success in an increasingly competitive world.

  • Nurturing Well-Rounded Students:

Expanding extracurricular offerings under the SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO), to ensure students build leadership skills,  explore their talents, and contribute actively to their School community.

  • Promoting STEAM Education:

Through hands-on programs in robotics, 3D printing, drones, and electric car design, we are eager to prepare students for the  21st century by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Sustainability and Community Engagement:

Our initiatives aim to instil environmental responsibility and foster global citizenship through the Social Responsibility  Department of the SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO), empowering students to make a meaningful and lasting impact on their communities.

These initiatives underscore our unwavering commitment to shaping our students who are not only academically competent but also socially conscious global citizens.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and what new ideas are you pursuing?

At ISC Dubai, our academic priorities each year are guided by a comprehensive and data-driven approach that ensures we address the needs of our students and school community effectively, supported by our Regional Academic Centre and the SABIS® Head Office, to address the evolving needs of our students. We analyse performance data, engagement levels, and well-being metrics to tailor strategies for student success. Input from students, teachers, and administrators helps us identify focus areas and align our goals with educational priorities. By exploring emerging teaching approaches and integrating our continuously enhanced technologies, we ensure our curriculum keeps pace with the dynamic educational landscape. By focusing on these strategies, ISC Dubai delivers a forward-thinking education that empowers students to thrive.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next five years?

As part of the SABIS® network, with over 138 years of expertise in delivering high-quality education, we anticipate significant challenges and opportunities in the field of education over the coming years. Addressing these challenges requires innovative strategies rooted in SABIS®’s philosophy of academic rigor, inclusivity, and lifelong learning.

Integrating emerging technologies into the classroom

Integrating emerging technologies like AI, virtual reality, and data analytics into the classroom presents opportunities to enhance learning while maintaining our traditional, proven teaching methods.

Ensuring equitable access to these technologies remains a significant concern. The SABIS® Educational System already leverages cutting-edge tools such as SABIS® unique e-books, interactive smartboards, and robust digital platforms like the Integrated Learning  System (ILS). We will continue to enhance these technologies to ensure every student benefits from a seamless blend of traditional and modern education.

Equipping students with transferable skills to thrive in a job market where many future careers are yet to be defined.

By fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability through structured curricula, SABIS® prepares students to excel in emerging fields. Initiatives like the SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO) teach essential life skills, teamwork, and leadership, ensuring students are future-ready.

Rising academic and societal pressures demand schools prioritize mental health and emotional resilience.

SABIS® schools cultivate a supportive environment where students feel valued and safe. Through the SLO’s Academic Department and  Wellness Department, students access peer-to-peer support, creating a culture that promotes emotional well-being and a growth mindset.

Preparing students for a world where cross-cultural collaboration and global citizenship are paramount.

With students from over 86 nationalities at ISC Dubai alone, SABIS® fosters cultural intelligence and unity. Through our powerful SLO program, students develop a global mindset, learning to navigate cultural dynamics with empathy and respect.

Maintaining a high-quality teaching workforce

Maintaining a high-quality teaching workforce amid increasing demands on educators requires continuous support and development.  SABIS® achieves this by investing in teacher training, offering robust professional development programs, and employing systems such as the SABIS® Academic Monitoring System (AMS) and other Computer Correctable Exams. These initiatives ensure that our teachers remain motivated, well-supported, and highly effective in delivering top-quality education.

Identifying and entering new territories to meet the growing demand for quality education.

The proven SABIS® model enables scalable expansion while maintaining academic excellence. By partnering with communities and governments, SABIS® will continue to bring its educational system to underserved regions globally.

Education is both an anchor and a springboard in an ever-changing world. At SABIS®, we see challenges as opportunities to innovate,  refine, and adapt. By staying committed to our core values and leveraging our time-tested educational system, we are confident in our ability to navigate these challenges and continue empowering students to achieve their full potential.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

1. The SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO)

The SLO empowers students to take an active role in their school community, fostering a sense of responsibility and leadership. By involving students in academic and extracurricular activities, the SLO helps them build confidence, develop a growth mindset, and stay motivated.

2. Integrated Learning System (ILS)

SABIS®’s ILS is designed to keep students engaged through structured and interactive learning. Regular assessments and gap-filling exercises ensure that no student is left behind, building confidence and interest in their progress.

3. Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

– Motivation is key for engaging students. Recognizing their achievements, setting goals, and fostering a supportive environment through SLO helps maintain their interest. Extrinsic rewards and intrinsic rewards work together to motivate students.

4. Technology Integration

Incorporating e-learning tools, interactive smartboards, and digital platforms like the SABIS® Digital Platform appeals to tech-savvy students, making learning dynamic and enjoyable.

5. Engaging Lesson Delivery

Teachers use the SABIS® Point System to deliver lessons in small, manageable steps, ensuring students are actively engaged throughout the learning process. Frequent checks for understanding and interactive questioning help sustain interest.

6. Building Relationships and Emotional Support

Positive relationships between the school and students are essential. Teachers and staff foster an inclusive, supportive environment where students feel safe, valued, and encouraged to actively engage in their learning journey.

7. Encouraging Peer Support

Through the SLO and peer tutoring, students support each other academically and socially, building a sense of community and mutual encouragement.

8. Celebrating Achievements

Highlighting student successes, whether big or small, reinforces their efforts and motivates others to strive for excellence.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

At ISC Dubai, inclusivity and equality are at the core of our educational philosophy. We are committed to ensuring that every student feels welcome, valued, and empowered to achieve their full potential. This commitment is reflected in several key aspects of our  school’s approach:

1. Non-Selective Admissions Policy

ISC Dubai operates a non-selective admissions policy, welcoming students of all backgrounds and abilities. Our belief is that every child has the potential to succeed, and we aim to provide the tools and support they need to thrive. This approach ensures that our school community is diverse, fostering mutual respect and understanding among students.

2. Whole-Class Approach

The SABIS® Educational System emphasizes a whole-class approach to ensure that every student progresses together. Structured lesson delivery, frequent assessments, and tailored interventions help identify and address individual learning gaps early. By fostering collaboration and teamwork in the classroom, all students are encouraged to contribute and succeed collectively.

3. Unbiased Exams and Data-Driven Insights

Examinations and assessments are standardized and managed by the SABIS® Regional Center, ensuring fairness and consistency. Computer-based marking eliminates bias and provides objective feedback, ensuring every student is evaluated based on their performance. Real-time academic data enables timely follow-up and targeted support for students who need additional help.

4. Follow-up from Academic Quality Controllers (AQC)

Our AQCs play a vital role in monitoring and supporting student progress. They collaborate closely with teachers, administrators,  students (prefects), and parents to ensure that students who require additional support receive the necessary guidance and resources to overcome challenges. Regular reviews and targeted interventions ensure that no student is left behind.

5. Outreach Department in the SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO)

The Outreach Department within the SLO promotes inclusivity by creating opportunities for every student to engage in academic,  social, and extracurricular activities. Peer mentoring, community service, and leadership initiatives help students build confidence,  develop new skills, and feel a sense of belonging.

Through its inclusive policies, unbiased assessments, structured support systems, and focus on holistic development, ISC Dubai ensures that all students feel welcome and have equal opportunities to succeed. This comprehensive approach reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering a supportive and equitable learning environment.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

At ISC Dubai, the well-being of our students is a top priority. We are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive school environment where every student feels valued and supported. Our proactive approach to addressing student stress and bullying combines education, peer-led initiatives, professional support, and clear policies to ensure a harmonious atmosphere.

Regular campaigns, workshops, and activities such as anti-bullying weeks, mental health awareness days, and stress management sessions educate students, staff, and parents about recognizing and addressing stress and bullying. These initiatives foster a culture of empathy, understanding, and proactive intervention.

A key pillar of our anti-bullying efforts is the Student Life Organization’s (SLO) Discipline Department, which includes anti-bullying prefects who work diligently to combat bullying. With ample wellness and discipline prefects in every classroom across all grades— from primary to high school—these prefects are instrumental in creating a safe and respectful environment. They are trained to identify and address bullying incidents promptly and work alongside their peers to promote kindness, respect, and teamwork,  reinforcing our zero-tolerance policy for bullying.

Through its Wellness Department, the SLO further supports students with stress relief activities, mentorship programs, and anonymous feedback channels, empowering students to share concerns and support one another. These peer-led initiatives strengthen the school’s culture of mutual respect and compassion.

Dedicated social workers and school counsellors provide additional support through individual and group counselling, helping students build resilience and develop coping strategies. These professionals collaborate closely with teachers, parents, and administrators to address issues holistically, ensuring comprehensive care.

ISC Dubai enforces a robust zero-tolerance policy for bullying, supported by clear reporting mechanisms that allow students and parents to raise concerns with confidence. Each case is handled promptly, discreetly, and effectively, while teachers and staff are trained to recognize signs of distress and intervene early.

Through character education, supported by our Moral Education program and the ongoing Manners Maketh Man campaign, as well as extracurricular activities and community-building events, ISC Dubai fosters a school culture where students feel safe, connected,  and supported. By instilling values such as respect, integrity, and empathy, and encouraging inclusivity and teamwork, we actively prevent bullying, reduce stress, and empower students to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

Our integrated approach—combining education, peer leadership, professional support, and strong policies—ensures that student well-being remains at the heart of ISC Dubai’s mission.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

At ISC Dubai, we go beyond academics to ensure students leave school as well-rounded, confident individuals ready to excel in university, their careers, and their personal lives. Through the SLO, career counselling, and holistic education, we equip them with the tools to face the future with resilience, adaptability, and determination.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

At ISC Dubai, we believe that education is a partnership between the school, parents, and the broader community. By fostering open communication and collaboration, we ensure that parents and the community play an integral role in shaping the school’s success.

We maintain open channels of communication to ensure parents feel heard and valued. Regular meetings and feedback sessions allow parents to share their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions. Our commitment to transparency ensures parents are kept informed about school initiatives, academic programs, and their children’s progress.

ISC Dubai hosts regular events to foster a sense of community. These events strengthen the bond between parents and the school.

Through the SABIS® Digital Platform, parents have real-time access to their children’s academic progress, attendance, and behaviour.  This tool empowers parents to stay involved and provides a foundation for constructive discussions with the school.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

At ISC Dubai, we believe that a strong school culture is the foundation for attracting and retaining exceptional educators. By fostering a supportive, inclusive, and positive working environment, we ensure that teachers feel valued, motivated, and inspired to contribute their best.

We prioritize creating a workplace that fosters collaboration, mutual respect, and a sense of belonging. Teachers thrive when they feel part of a cohesive team working towards shared goals. Open communication and transparency are key pillars in building trust among our staff members. Regular meetings, feedback opportunities, and acknowledgement of achievements help maintain morale and positivity.

ISC Dubai understands and accepts that, in today’s globalized world, people often relocate for various reasons. While staff members may come and go, we focus on making their time with us as enriching and fulfilling as possible. With a teaching community representing 25 countries, we celebrate diversity and value the unique perspectives they bring. This fosters an inclusive, welcoming,  and dynamic environment where collaboration and cultural exchange thrive.

We invest in the continuous growth of our educators through training, workshops, and access to the SABIS® Professional Development  Institute. This equips them with cutting-edge teaching strategies and ensures they feel confident and competent in their roles,  regularly celebrating accomplishments, providing constructive feedback, and offering support when needed ensures teachers remain motivated and engaged.

At ISC Dubai we encourage a healthy work-life balance by promoting efficient practices and offering support systems that allow teachers to manage their professional and personal lives effectively. Our unique ‘Codes of Effective Communication,’ a structured framework consisting of 16 guidelines for effective communication for both teachers and students, emphasizes the importance of collaboration, self-care, and maintaining a positive attitude, contributing to a supportive and inclusive school culture. At ISC Dubai, we are committed to providing an environment where teachers feel supported, motivated, and valued. While we acknowledge the transient nature of global teaching roles, our goal is to make every educator’s time with us meaningful, impactful, and rewarding. This approach ensures that we continue to attract and retain great teachers who contribute to our legacy of excellence.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

At ISC Dubai, we are committed to the professional growth and career advancement of our educators. We believe in nurturing talent and providing opportunities for teachers to expand their roles, both within our school and across the global SABIS® Network.

Teachers at ISC Dubai have access to a variety of leadership roles, such as Academic Quality Controllers (AQCs), Department Heads,  and positions within the SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO). These roles allow our teachers to take on additional responsibilities, develop managerial skills, and contribute to the school’s success in meaningful ways. We encourage initiative and innovation,  recognizing teachers who demonstrate leadership qualities and offering them opportunities to mentor and guide their peers.

With a presence in 21 countries on five continents, the SABIS® Network provides unparalleled opportunities for career growth. As new schools and positions are regularly created within the network, teachers can advance their careers by applying for leadership roles globally. Educators benefit from a wealth of resources, training programs, and networking opportunities that equip them to take on leadership positions across the organization.

ISC Dubai and the SABIS® Network prioritize continuous professional development. Through workshops, training sessions, and access to the SABIS® Professional Development Institute, teachers are prepared for higher leadership responsibilities. These programs ensure that educators are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel in leadership roles. We are proud to provide a pathway for teachers to grow both professionally and personally. Whether through leadership roles within the school or opportunities across the global SABIS® Network, we are dedicated to fostering the development of our educators and helping them reach their full potential.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

At ISC Dubai, all our after-school activities are designed to develop students holistically, equipping them with skills, values, and experiences that contribute positively to their futures. Two key pillars stand out for their profound impact:

1. SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO)

  • Through its nine departments, including Academics, Discipline, and Social Responsibility, the SLO plays a crucial role in shaping students’ character and leadership skills.
  • Activities within the SLO teach students to take ownership of their educational journey, develop managerial and organizational skills, and cultivate a sense of responsibility toward their school community.
  • The SLO fosters essential life skills like teamwork, communication, and decision-making, which are invaluable in both personal and professional life.

2. STEAM Clubs

  • Robotics, Drones, Mechatronics, and Electric Vehicle Grand Prix (EVGP):
  • These activities foster innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. By engaging in hands-on projects, students gain practical experience in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.
  • For instance, our participation in initiatives like the Electric Vehicle Grand Prix (EVGP) teaches students teamwork, engineering,  and environmental consciousness, preparing them for future careers in technology, engineering, and sustainability.
  • These clubs also spark curiosity and prepare students for careers in cutting-edge industries like AI, automation, and renewable energy.

Both the SLO and STEAM Clubs align with SABIS®’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. The SLO focuses on fostering leadership, collaboration, and personal growth, empowering students to take an active role in their school community. Meanwhile,  STEAM Clubs nurture technical and innovative skills, encouraging creativity and problem-solving. Together, these activities ensure that our students are prepared not only for academic success but also for meaningful and impactful futures.

12. As a Principal, what is your definition of success?

As a principal, my definition of success is multifaceted and deeply rooted in the SABIS® philosophy of empowering individuals with the education, skills, and values they need to thrive in a dynamic and interconnected world. Success, to me, is the ability to create an environment where every student, teacher, and staff member feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential. It

goes beyond academic results, encompassing a holistic approach to growth that focuses on character development, emotional resilience, and lifelong learning.

Success is witnessing students excel academically, develop leadership skills through the SABIS® Student Life Organization (SLO), and leave school as confident, adaptable, and ethical individuals ready to make meaningful contributions to society. As a non-selective school, ensuring equal opportunities for all students—regardless of their background or abilities—is a cornerstone of our approach.  Success is reflected in nurturing diverse talents and fostering a culture of inclusivity. True success lies in equipping students with the knowledge, cultural intelligence, and life skills required to navigate the complexities of a globalized world while maintaining integrity and empathy. Each day, I approach my work with a commitment to meaningful reforms and innovations that elevate our community.  I leave the office every evening excited to return the next morning, knowing that the journey of growth and improvement is ongoing.

It also means cultivating a school environment where collaboration, respect, and positivity flourish among students, teachers, and parents. This culture creates a strong sense of belonging and motivates everyone to strive for excellence. Equally important is providing opportunities for teachers and other staff members to grow as professionals and leaders, enabling them to deliver high-quality education while feeling fulfilled and valued in their roles.

Leadership, in my view, is about lifting others and helping them become the best they can be. A leader’s legacy is not etched with the heavy hand of ego but with the gentle touch of humility, leaving a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of those they work and deal with. Success is knowing that the legacy of our school extends far beyond its walls—through students who make positive contributions to their society, parents who feel supported and involved, and teachers who take pride in their role within the SABIS® network. Ultimately, success is about the ripple effect of leadership—one that inspires and uplifts others builds a community of lifelong learners, and contributes to a brighter, more compassionate future.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

Lead with humility and lift those you are responsible for, helping them become the best they can be. Leave a legacy of purpose,  kindness, and unwavering dedication to building a better future for all. Be a continuous reformer, inspired by the words of His Highness  Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai: ‘The race for EXCELLENCE  has NO FINISH LINE.’
