Empowering Global Citizens: A Principal’s Vision for Future-Ready Education

As the Principal of the Global Indian International School (GIIS) SMART Campus, I am often asked about our approach to education, our vision for the future, and how we foster a truly nurturing and innovative environment. It’s a privilege to lead a school that stands at the forefront of educational excellence, and I’m delighted to share some of our core principles and exciting plans.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

At GIIS SMART Campus, our plans for 2025 are ambitious and deeply rooted in our commitment to holistic development and future-readiness. Building on our strong foundation of academic rigor and technological integration, we aim to further personalize learning pathways for our students. This includes expanding our skill-based programs, integrating more real-world projects into the curriculum, and leveraging AI-powered adaptive learning platforms to cater to individual student needs.

We plan to enhance our global collaboration initiatives, such as virtual exchanges and joint projects with schools worldwide. We are exploring partnerships with leading universities for summer programs as well as customized educational learning journeys overseas that will allow our students to gain hands-on experience to look for innovative solutions for real world issues.

We’re strengthening our career exploration and university support programme by adding industry internships and expert mentorship for our students.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and which new ideas are you pursuing?

Our academic focus is determined through a dynamic process that involves analysing global educational trends, reviewing student performance data, gathering feedback from parents, teachers, and industry experts. We equip students with key skills like critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication to enable them to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving, innovation-driven world.

We are actively pursuing new ideas, such as Interdisciplinary learning and student-led research projects, focussing on holistic and passion-driven learning. From collaborating to design sustainable cities – combining principles of physics, environmental science, and art – in the Young Mayor’s competition to presenting at platforms like the GIIS MedVet Conference and Law Summit, our students connect knowledge across subjects and pursue real-world impact.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

The education landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and we anticipate several key challenges over the next few years. Firstly, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence and automation will necessitate a fundamental shift in what and how we teach, emphasizing skills that complement, rather than compete with, technology.

Secondly, ensuring equitable access to quality education globally, especially in the wake of disruptions like pandemics, remains a significant challenge. Thirdly, fostering digital citizenship and critical media literacy in a world saturated with information and misinformation is paramount.

Finally, addressing the mental well-being of students in an increasingly complex and demanding world will require even greater focus and innovative support systems. The biggest challenge I foresee for schools is being able to nurture the skill of discernment – the fine balance between using your head, heart and hand in perfect synchrony for the betterment of society.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

Keeping students engaged is at the heart of GIIS 9 GEMS pedagogical approach. We believe in creating a vibrant and stimulating learning environment that caters to diverse learning styles. For those who struggle, we employ a multi-pronged approach:

  • Personalized learning plans: We identify learning gaps and provide targeted support through remedial classes, peer tutoring, and one-on-one mentorship.
  • Differentiated instruction: Teachers adapt teaching methods and materials to suit varied learning paces through regular or special classes on Saturdays.
  • Project-based learning: Engaging projects that allow students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios make learning more relevant and enjoyable. For example, our Grade 6- 8 students were recently invited to design outfits / accessories using recyclable plastics and prepare for a Green Fashion parade, Trash to trend. We had children work in the Maker Space to design wireless power transmission for cars, watches and keyboards or further still Project Plastic2Art an initiative to raise awareness about and find sustainable ways to reuse plastic.
  • Positive reinforcement and recognition: We believe in celebrating small victories and acknowledging effort helps build confidence and intrinsic motivation.
  • Integration of technology and interactive apps: Through interactive tools and educational games, we make learning more dynamic and fun.

To inspire less motivated students, we focus on first identifying the root of their disengagement — be it subject interest, personal challenges, or learning style. Then, we take targeted action, like connecting them with mentors, aligning learning with their passions, or adjusting their learning environment to better support their growth.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of GIIS. We are committed to creating a welcoming environment where every student feels valued, respected and empowered — to reach their full potential.

Diverse and inclusive curriculum: Our curricula options incorporate diverse perspectives and celebrate various cultures, ensuring all students see themselves reflected in their learning. We offer students the gift of choice as well as the gift of voice.
Strong pastoral care system: Our dedicated counsellors and pastoral care team provide emotional support and guidance to students, fostering a sense of belonging.
Zero tolerance for discrimination: We have clear policies against any form of discrimination – regularly reinforced through school assemblies and workshops.
Support for learning differences: Our Special Education Needs teacher works closely with students, parents, and teachers to provide individualized support and accommodations where possible.
Equal opportunities in co and extracurriculars: We ensure all students have access to a wide range of co-curricular and extracurricular activities, from sports to arts and academic clubs, providing avenues for every student to discover their talents and excel. For instance, our Interact club brings together students from diverse backgrounds to work on community service projects, fostering empathy and understanding. We have over 30 student led clubs that provide students an opportunity to pursue their interest.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

GIIS is extremely proactive in addressing student stress and bullying. Our approach is preventative, interventionist and supportive:

  • Comprehensive well-being program: We have a robust well-being program entitled Evolve, Emerge, Elevate that includes workshops on stress management, mindfulness, and emotional regulation along with reflective and interactive activities for students and parents. Our counsellors conduct regular check-ins with students and are always available for confidential discussions.
  • Anti-bullying policy: We have a clear and strict anti-bullying policy that is communicated to all students, parents, and staff. Incidents are investigated thoroughly and addressed promptly.
  • Peer support networks: We encourage the development of peer support networks, where student council members mentor younger ones, creating a supportive community.
  • Open communication channels: We maintain open communication channels between students, parents, and school staff, encouraging everyone to report any concerns immediately. Our 24/7 help desk provides easy access for students and parents to voice their concerns, give feedback and suggestions
  • Parent webinars: We regularly conduct webinars for parents on identifying signs of stress and bullying and how to support their children, besides various parenting tips needed to support their children at home.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

Preparing students for life beyond graduation is one of our core objectives. Our approach extends beyond academic knowledge to encompass critical life skills:

  • 21st-century skills integration: We embed critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and creativity across the curriculum. Our Innovation Lab/ Makers Space or annual event RWCC ( Real World Challenges Convention) for example, encourage students to develop solutions to real-world problems.
  • Career Counselling and University Guidance: From an early age, students receive career exposure, and in their senior years, comprehensive University guidance, including university application support, mock interviews, and workshops on resume building and personal branding. We organize annual career fairs where students can interact with professionals from various industries.
  • Leadership opportunities: Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles in student councils, clubs and house systems, developing their organizational, teamwork, and decision-making abilities. As such, our student leaders organize and manage many of our school events, from Sports Days to Cultural Festivals.
  • Financial literacy and entrepreneurship: We offer modules on financial literacy in CCA and encourage entrepreneurial thinking through initiatives like our annual Green Pitch or Social business Entrepreneurs proposals, where students develop, prototype and market their products or services.
  • Global citizenship and social responsibility: Through community service projects and awareness campaigns, students develop a sense of social responsibility and an understanding of global issues. We have projects that have been institutionalised and have shown impactful reach.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

Parental and community involvement are vital to our school’s success. We view parents as crucial partners in their children’s education and actively seek their engagement:

  • Parent Engagement Programme: Our PEP is a highly active and influential programme that collaborates closely with the school on various initiatives, from organising and contributing to events as well as providing feedback on policies.
  • Regular communication: We maintain transparent and regular communication through parent-teacher conferences, newsletters, school portals, and social media updates.
  • Volunteer opportunities: Parents are encouraged to volunteer in various capacities, from assisting in classrooms to assisting field trips, supporting school events and providing industry insights as experts in different fields.
  • Community partnerships: We forge strong partnerships with local businesses, universities, and community organizations to provide students with real-world learning experiences, internships, and mentorship opportunities. For instance, we explore partnerships with a local firms to provide internship and mentorship experiences and workshops, providing students with direct industry exposure. With community Centres our students contribute through cultural performances or by supporting the orphans, elderly or less fortunate in the community.
  • Open forums and feedback mechanisms: We have a 24/7 helpdesk facility and use surveys to gather feedback from parents and the community, which directly informs our decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

We cultivate a school culture that values and empowers our teachers:

  • Professional development: We invest heavily in ongoing professional development through LMS systems offering diverse training programs, subject related workshops, and opportunities for teachers to attend conferences and pursue courses of interest.
  • Collaborative environment: We foster a collaborative environment where teachers are encouraged to share best practices, co-plan lessons, and engage in peer observation and feedback.
  • Empowerment and autonomy: We empower teachers to innovate in their classrooms and provide them with the autonomy to tailor their teaching methods to best suit their students’ needs.
  • Recognition and appreciation: We recognize and appreciate our teachers’ hard work and dedication through awards, celebrations and opportunities for public acknowledgment.
  • Supportive leadership: Our leadership team provides consistent support, mentorship, and a clear vision, ensuring teachers feel valued and heard.
  • Work-life balance: We strive to promote a healthy work-life balance for our staff, recognizing that well-being is essential for effective teaching.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

Absolutely! We are deeply committed to nurturing leadership potential within our teaching staff. We believe that empowering teachers to take on leadership roles strengthens the entire school community.

  • Mentorship programs: Experienced teachers mentor newer colleagues through the Buddy program, helping them settle in, and grow in their work environment .
  • Leadership development workshops: We offer internal and external workshops focused on developing leadership competencies, such as team management, conflict resolution, strategic planning etc .

  • Pathways to senior leadership: We have a clear pathway for teachers to progress into senior leadership roles within the school, providing them with the necessary training and experience. Many of our current heads of department and academic coordinators started as class teachers at GIIS.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

While all our after-school activities are designed to contribute positively to student development, if I had to choose one that has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future, it would be robotics, coding programming languages and hackathon activities conducted by the Tech Club.

In an increasingly digital and automated world, the skills gained in these clubs – problem-solving, computational thinking, logical reasoning, collaboration, and perseverance – are absolutely foundational. Students learn to design, build, and program robots, troubleshooting challenges and seeing their ideas come to life. This hands-on experience not only fosters a deep understanding of STEM principles but also cultivates creativity and resilience in the face of complex problems. These are skills that are transferable across all disciplines and are highly sought after in virtually every industry of the future. Our GIIS Tech Club, for example, consistently performs exceptionally well in national and international competitions, demonstrating the profound impact this activity has on our students’ capabilities and confidence.

12. As a Principal, what is your definition of success?

As Principal, my definition of success extends far beyond academic results, though those are certainly important. For me, success is seeing every student grow into a confident, compassionate and resilient individual who is equipped with the skills and mindset to thrive in an ever-changing world, contribute positively to society, and pursue a life of purpose and fulfilment.

It’s about fostering critical thinkers who question, innovators who create, and global citizens who understand and respect diverse perspectives. Success is measured not just by exam scores, but by the development of strong character, a genuine love for learning, empathy for others, and the courage to embrace challenges. When I see our alumni making a meaningful impact in their chosen fields, or hear stories of our students demonstrating kindness and leadership — that, for me, is the true hallmark of our success.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

If I could move this world in one sentence, it would be: ‘Learn, discern, grow, and give back — because the world gets better when we rise together’.
