Focused, calm classroom: UAE schools, students adapt to Ramadan routines

Private schools changed their usual hours for students, shortening the school day to no more than five hours during Ramadan 2026

As Ramadan 2026 begins, UAE schools witnessed a mix of heavier morning traffic, some time adjustments, and noticeably a calmer atmosphere on campus, with strong attendance and punctuality in many schools.

Private schools in the emirate changed their usual hours for all students, shortening the school day to no more than five hours during the holy month.

At The Hope English School – a North Point Education School, Principal Gary Neil Williams said the transition into Ramadan routines had been smooth. He pointed out that students have maintained “strong punctuality and high attendance,” showing responsibility even amid changes to their morning routines.

“We are proud to see that our students have maintained strong punctuality and high attendance, demonstrating responsibility and commitment despite changes to their morning routines. Their calm, respectful attitude and positive engagement reflect the strong partnership between home and school during this blessed month,” he said.

Traffic builds, but punctuality holds steady

Given that traffic typically intensifies during Ramadan mornings, the school focused on easing pressure on families. “We are supporting families through understanding, flexibility, and well-managed arrival procedures to ensure students settle quickly and positively into their day. We are reassuring parents not to feel pressured, encouraging them to prioritise safety and well-being, and reminding them that a calm start to the day sets the tone for successful learning,” Williams added.

Across campus, he described a shift in tone from the very first bell. “The start of Ramadan brings a noticeably calm, reflective, and respectful atmosphere across the campus.

“In classrooms, students demonstrate increased focus and empathy towards one another; in assemblies, we emphasise the values of kindness, gratitude, and community; and during break times, there is a peaceful tone with students showing maturity and consideration, especially towards those who are fasting,” he added.

Assemblies, exhibitions and meaningful conversations

At Credence High School, CEO-Principal Deepika Thapar Singh said attendance patterns have largely remained unchanged.

“In terms of punctuality and attendance, we have observed no significant change. Our students are always enthusiastic and eager to come to school, and this culture of commitment and positivity continues during Ramadan as well. While traffic can be slightly heavier during the holy month, we remain supportive of families and encourage calm planning to ensure a smooth start to the day.”

The school marked the first day with activities designed to help students connect deeply with the spirit of the month.

“We began the first day of Ramadan with a beautiful and meaningful Ramadan Assembly, followed by an interactive Ramadan Exhibition that truly set the tone for the holy month. Students across all grades visited the auditorium, where creative exhibits, engaging games, fun facts, trivia, and thoughtfully designed visual displays brought the essence of Ramadan to life.”

She added that the exhibition, featuring handcrafted models and lifelike representations, helped children experience Ramadan’s core values.

“With handcrafted models and lifelike representations created by our students and teachers, the exhibition offered a strong visual and experiential feel of Ramadan, helping children connect deeply with its values of compassion, gratitude, patience, and generosity. It was a vibrant yet reflective start, making the message of Ramadan both educational and memorable in a fun, interactive way.”

Food and water visibility are carefully managed

At Woodlem Park School, Hamidiya, Principal Shiny Davison said the day began with focused classroom conversations and presentations to help students understand the deeper meaning of fasting.

“Special Ramadan presentations are conducted during the morning Rituals time and within classrooms, where teachers explain the meaning of fasting, the importance of gratitude, charity, patience, and self-discipline. Through stories, reflections, and guided discussions, students learn how Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and water, but about purifying thoughts, strengthening character, and developing empathy for those in need.”

“We are very mindful of maintaining a respectful environment on campus. Food and water visibility are carefully managed, especially in common areas, and children are gently guided to be considerate of peers who are fasting.”

Revised timings have also helped streamline logistics.

“Our revised school timings from 7.30am to 12.30pm have significantly reduced traffic congestion, allowing buses to arrive on time and minimising logistical challenges. Overall, the atmosphere on campus is calm, reflective, and culturally enriching, fostering unity and mutual respect among students.”
