Since its inception in 1989, METU Development Foundation Schools (METU DF Schools) has aimed to provide students with a high quality education guided by excellent teachers with access to the most modern facilities available. The school seeks to encourage students to inquire, to think critically, to create, and to develop into "life-long learners" contributing to a modern democratic society.
The academic program is designed to promote a rigorous student-centered learning environment for highly motivated students in pursuit of excellence. Proficiency in both the mother tongue, Turkish, and the foreign language, English, is of utmost importance. To enhance communication skills and fluency (in addition to the English Language and Literature courses) Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Geometry are instructed in English at High School.
In addition to its regular academic program, the school offers a wide range of extra curricular academic, social, cultural, and sports activities. These activities are organized around the interests of the students and include topics as diverse as drama, debate, dancing, web design, cinema, music, painting, basketball, football, photography, history, geography, and more. Through these activities, they learn to collaborate, cooperate, negotiate, and compromise.
The school's hands-on-approach is enhanced by its modern facilities. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology lessons are conducted in science laboratories and all other lessons take place in smart classrooms. Other facilities include well stocked libraries, gymnasiums, out-door sports fields, and a cultural center comprising art and crafts workshops, music rooms, and a conference hall.
Furthermore, the students have the opportunity of joining international clubs such as Model United Nations, European Youth Parliament, National Association of Independent Schools Challenge 20/20,Climate - Friendly Management in European Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment, or Destination Imagination. By taking part in these clubs or projects, students not only improve their listening, speaking, writing, and research skills but also build awareness of cultural differences and develop a global perspective while maintaining a sense of respect for their own cultural identity.
The school is authorized by the Ministry of Education as are all public and private schools in Turkey, and the curriculum is standardized by the Ministry of Education from K-12. There is more freedom and flexibility in the area of English language teaching where the number of weekly lesson hours is greater at private schools than public state schools.
