Ai International School

Ai International School was founded with love in June 1986. The school started with only 5 students and one teacher, our school founder, Ms. Sue Nakanishi. The school was sponsored by Land Master Corporation (Master’s Corporation presently). Its’ aim was to provide quality education and care for the children of the foreign and local community. Their further purpose was “to assist in a full orientation service for locals and expatriates”. At Ai International School we believe that children should be given every opportunity to develop that uniqueness and individuality whilst being helped to love all the challenges, pleasures, difficulties and camaraderie involved in learning.

We are a preschool and kindergarten, where children learn to respect differences and develop borderless friendships through the international atmosphere in the classrooms and activities. As the children experience many new things at their first school, we take it as our responsibility to ensure that those experiences are as wonderful as can be. We want the children to come to love everything about learning, and to become lifelong learners. English is used as the common language to communicate in a cross cultural environment. Our students are from many different countries with various backgrounds. Our educators are from around the world just like our children. Many theories and ideas from the education systems of the home countries of the staff are included, reflecting the international nature of the school.

We take an eclectic approach to our curriculum; guidelines as set out by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (USA) forming the basis and we are continually researching and including current trends and practices in early childhood classrooms. A low student-teacher ratio is available for each program, which enhances the high quality of education for each individual. The programs are designed to accommodate each individual child’s physical, social, learning and emotional level and needs. Curriculum for each program includes: Communication Skill Building, Language, Social Studies, Building of Mathematical Concepts, Music and Rhythm, Creative and Dramatic Activities, Pre-reading/ Reading Activities, Science, and Muscular Coordination and Development Activities. School Lunch and Dinner box Services are available daily. After School Program is available for regular students, siblings, and school age students till 6:30pm everyday. Summer Program is available in July and August.

With patience and firmness, we let the children know clearly what is acceptable and try to have the children make their own choices. We incorporate the principles of “Conflict Resolution” from “Living Values Education”.They acknowledge the child’s feelings and then comfort or hug the child. Children may sit with or stay close to a teacher until they are comfortable enough to be by themselves.

We are located in the middle of this dynamic city of Tokyo, we can see Tokyo Tower from our school windows! Although Tokyo is a large and busy city, we are lucky to be situated in such a safe and quiet neighborhood with various public parks close by. We have been located in the same area in Mita for over 20 years and our neighbours have been very supportive of our school. Being in a central area of the city gives us access to many educational locations such as Science Museums, Art Museums, Aquariums, Zoos and many more interesting locations children love to visit. The Public Transportation System gives our parents and staff very convenient access to the school from anywhere around the city!
