Aitken College is a co-educational, independent Uniting Church school catering for students of all faiths and religious denominations in the northwest region of Melbourne. Since opening in February, 1999, Aitken College has provided a safe, friendly and purposeful environment where students are able to value and enjoy learning.

Creativity is nurtured and academic endeavour is encouraged and acknowledged. A traditional curriculum is provided from Foundation to Year 12, with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Students are encouraged to use their expanding knowledge as a basis for investigation, problem solving, critical thinking and creativity.

Our exceptional 18.5 hectare site offers immense potential for a diverse and imaginative curriculum including physical activity and the integration of outdoor activities and practical work in classroom subjects. As well as fostering a love of learning, we aim to provide students with skills for living. Academic achievement is supported and rewarded across all of the subject disciplines, and students are encouraged to deal constructively with strengths and weaknesses in achieving their maximum potential.

Our program helps each student to develop self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. Ample opportunity is given to develop leadership skills, within the school and through involvement in community activities, and we encourage consideration for the needs of others and a respect for the environment at both a local and global level. Above all, we aim to provide a safe learning environment for every child. The values we commend to our students arise from the Gospel and the traditions of the Christian Church – values like tolerance, kindness, respect for oneself and others, a reverence for life and the development of personal honesty, integrity and self-discipline.

Our College motto In Mind and Spirit reflects the nurturing of educational and spiritual growth. Values such as honesty and integrity, acceptance and respect for self are seen as important. These can be supported through establishing positive relationships between all members of our community. Our unique site is welcoming and provides opportunities for students to learn about sustainability and care for their environment. Our contemporary curriculum provides opportunities for students to focus on their learning and teachers on their teaching.

The vision of Aitken College is to develop and support a learning community of students, staff and their families in a faith partnership with the Uniting Church in Australia. Our Mission is to building on a foundation of Christian values, the mission of Aitken College is to enable students to become informed and compassionate members of the wider community by inspiring academic achievement and creativity, nurturing self worth, encouraging environmental responsibility and committing to service with and for others. Aitken College will aim to:

  • Make the Christian faith relevant through an understanding of its major teachings and by encouraging a personal faith journey
  • Inspire and challenge students to realise their intellectual potential and equip them for lifelong learning.
  • Promote and develop creativity and self expression.
  • Enable each student to realise their self worth in a safe, healthy and happy environment that responds to personal and community needs
  • Encourage individuals and the community to take responsibility for the environment and to act accordingly.
  • Instil in students a sense of service and concern for the needs of others.

The curriculum focuses on the children’s educational and individual needs, respecting their differences. Learning experiences occur in the classroom, on the school grounds, and during excursions. The students also learn from each other; they share their cultural and personal experiences. Their interaction within the College focuses not only on learning experiences, but also on their active role as a valued community member. The community spirit is an essential component of our pastoral approach to learning experiences and social interaction. The students are supported and challenged in all aspects of their educational, social and emotional needs. An integral component of our program is promoting and supporting independence and resiliency. We work with families to assist all aspects of a child’s developmental needs.

Emphasis is placed on consolidating and extending the skills learnt in the Preparatory School. Through providing challenging and engaging activities students work towards more independent learning in small or large groups on a variety of tasks in each of the Key Learning Areas. We acknowledge that children learn at their own pace and when planning for learning, staff consider different learning styles and teaching approaches. We strive to differentiate the curriculum and cater for the differing needs of young learners. We support the notion that ‘one size does not fit all’. Students bring to school many different life experiences. As educators, we aim to make connections with these experiences through using various resources and learning platforms.

The Year 7 and 9 cohort consists of 5 homerooms per year level each with 150 students. With a view towards the rapidly approaching senior years, all of the staff who come in contact with the students work collectively to guide and support them as they improve their focus and concentration, re-order their priorities, and develop and sustain good study skills.
