What you'll receive
You’ll receive: $27,082 per year, tax free for up to 3 years.

About the Brown Group:
The Brown Group combines advanced experimental and computational techniques to provide new insights into the structure-function relationships in biomedical materials. While focusing on musculoskeletal tissues and related biomaterials, the group maintains an active interest in other high-performance biological materials including spider silk and ivory.

The Brown Group is also involved in a number of translational activities, including the development of new optics-based diagnostic devices, scalable nanostructured surfaces and 3D constructs for regenerative medicine, new devices and approaches for surgery, and automated analysis/interpretation techniques for medical imaging.

Your opportunity:
You will be able to develop in-depth knowledge, understanding and expertise in your chosen field of research. Technical development will be coupled with extensive professional development towards an academic or research and development career. You will benefit from access to flexible and bespoke experimental facilities, high level scientific expertise, access to a range of local and international collaborators, and world-class facilities including QUT's Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF).

Research projects:
Projects with key PhD positions available include:

  • Spider-silk: structure mechanics and synthesis
  • Understanding and exploiting the phenomenal properties of collagen
  • Surgery with rockets.

Other projects may include, but are not limited to:

  • Magnetically guided micro-rocket sutures
  • Deep learning in feasible medical image datasets, and translation to clinical practice
  • Controlling and harnessing collagen piezoelectricity for energy harvesting and biomedical materials
  • Development of an optical technique for the measurement of bioelectric fields
  • Evolutionary convergence for translational biomimicry
  • Hierarchical mechanics of biological materials
  • Development of a robotic endoscopy device based on electrorheological fluids
  • Development and exploitation of native spider cells and processing techniques for silk production and characterisation
  • Experimentally driven fibre network modelling to explore disease mechanisms
  • Development and implementation of highly multiplexed, antibody-labelled electron microscope imaging technique
  • Development of a novel 3D metal micro-printer
  • Guided self-assembly of matrices in hydrogels
  • Development of innovative approaches to diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions
  • Advancing the physical understanding of pain and disease.

How to apply
Contact Professor Cameron Brown to express your interest.

You may then apply through a formal assessment process, based on interviews, written work and references.

What happens next?
These scholarships will stay open until suitable candidates are found.

For more information about the application process, contact the Science and Engineering Faculty Research Scholarships Office.

To discuss the research project further, contact Professor Cameron Brown.

Eligibility

You must apply for and be admitted to our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Your research proposal must be innovative and high impact.

We'll accept applications from candidates from any academic background, provided you meet the eligibility requirements for the PhD.

About Company

QUT is a major Australian university with a global outlook and a real-world focus. We are one of the nation’s fastest growing research universities and our courses are in high demand. Our graduates include eight Rhodes Scholars, five of these awarded in the past six years.

We are an ambitious and collaborative institution that seeks to equip our students and graduates with the skills they\\'ll need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world. We are transforming the student experience we offer our 50,000 students and we place a premium on the international and national accreditation of our various professional degrees.

Our internationally award-winning Science and Engineering Centre is home to The Cube, acknowledged as one of the world’s largest digital interactive learning and display spaces. We established the world\\'s first Creative Industries Faculty, and we invest heavily in collaborative learning and interdisciplinary research environments.

We\\'re well known as \\'a university for the real world\\' because of our close links with industry and our relevant teaching and applied research. Industry representatives and professionals contribute to our course development, adding a practical perspective to theoretical education. Our academic staff consult in industry and work on industry projects which often involve students. Staff and students have access to the latest teaching technology.
