Canons High School promotes good school attendance and punctuality for every student. Regular and punctual attendance at school is both a legal requirement and essential for pupils to maximise their educational opportunities. School attendance is also a component of safeguarding children. School attendance is subject to various laws and this attendance policy is written to reflect these laws and guidance produced by the Department of Education.
For a child to reach their full educational potential a high level of school attendance is essential. We will consistently work towards a goal of 100% attendance for all students. Every opportunity will be used to promote positive attendance to students and their parents/carers. Each year the school will review attendance figures and set attendance/absence targets. These will reflect National Attendance targets.
We are an extremely vibrant, multicultural school in Harrow, NW London and are very proud to serve a comprehensive intake of students who make fabulous progress and achieve highly in their time with us.
In 2010 and 2013, the excellent work of our staff, our students, their families and the wider community was recognised by Ofsted as being outstanding. In 2014 the Department for Education recognised our leading work in staff development and the quality of teaching by designating Canons High as one of only 500 Teaching Schools across the country.
At Canons, we pride ourselves on the training and development of all our staff so that students are taught effectively and supported within and beyond the classroom to the highest levels. School leaders at all levels are well-equipped to use their professional judgment and a wide range of information to challenge and engage all students to achieve success, identify underachievement, act upon it and help students get back on track.
We offer a well-balanced two year KS3 programme that enables students to enjoy very high levels of success in their GCSE exams, which begin in Year 9. Students also have the opportunity for enrichment courses that allow them to go beyond the confines of academic qualifications and follow their dreams.
This wonderful provision ensures that students make progress that is better than the vast majority of schools, and that many of our GCSE, BTEC and A-Level courses have extremely high pass rates. Students with special educational needs, those from deprived backgrounds and those with very high levels of achievement at primary school all make exceptional progress, with over 90% of our A-Level students securing places at University.
Just as importantly to us, students leave Canons High School with a keen sense of right and wrong, a commitment to going above and beyond what is expected of them, a willingness to help others and the confidence to be helped by others. In short, they leave as fully-rounded and very likeable human beings who constantly challenge themselves to be better at everything they do. It is a pleasure to work with these students on a daily basis, and to work with the staff who create the conditions in which they can thrive.
Canons High School is a truly wonderful place to work and a fantastic place for students to learn. We are, however, restless for further improvement, challenging staff and students to go further, be better and achieve more. To this end we have developed with governors, staff, students and parents a ‘Vision for 2020’ that looks beyond the things that we have to do as a school to fulfil our obligations to government and taxpayers. Instead it focuses on the things we want to do because we believe that they are right in ensuring we remain at the heart of our community.
It is, of course, paramount for us that every child leaves Canons with a full set of qualifications in all of their subjects that will act as keys to unlock every door of opportunity they come across in their adult lives. More than this, we hope that they leave us with a commitment to learning that doesn’t stop at GCSEs, A-Levels or a degree, but which nourishes them throughout life and equips them to take on new challenges for the benefit of themselves, their families and their communities.
Just as importantly to us, we expect students to leave Canons High School with a keen sense of right and wrong, a commitment to going above and beyond what is expected of them, a willingness to help others and the confidence to be helped by others. Our expectation is that they leave us as fully-rounded and very likeable human beings who constantly challenge themselves to be better at everything they do. It is a pleasure to work with these students on a daily basis, and to work with the staff who create the conditions in which they can thrive.
Outstanding schools can be very strong at driving results upwards, or they can be very committed to caring for those who work and study there. Great schools do both, and Canons is a great school at the heart of our community. Staff and students achieve great things here, but they do so with a certainty that they are valued, respected and cared for in the process. It’s what makes us Canons.
