Clifton Hall has existed as an independent school since its inception in 1930. Originally a boys’ prep school, it was founded by Richard Killick and Robert Ainslie, who saw the need for a good independent feeder school. The school was built around the belief in both high academic standards and high moral standards, focusing on courtesy, self-respect and the development of character.

The school continued to flourish and under the Headship of George Mathewson was rightly perceived as the leading independent prep school in Scotland, if not the UK. Under Mark Adams, the school became fully co-educational, made the transition from Prep School to a Primary school and opened a Nursery school.

It was a huge privilege to be able to offer all-through education from age 3 to 18 in 2008, and since then the school has almost tripled in size. With our unique environment and our policy of limiting the school to only 400 students we can offer your child a quality of education unsurpassed.

So what makes Clifton Hall different from other schools? Well, we treat each pupil as an individual and we seek to personalise their education so that they can benefit from being given the opportunity to shine. Clifton Hall School will NEVER contain more than 400 pupils, in small classes and in small year groups. With this structure, we can discover talents, care and nurture and help to assist in the development of character and self-belief.

We see the student who is a talented ballet dancer in the same high regard as the student achieving an A at Advanced Higher in English in the same high regard as the junior pupil who has already attained Grade 8 on the violin. In other words, whatever your talent, whatever your ability, we will ensure you have the opportunity to develop in the way which is important to you. Clifton Hall continues to work hard in all areas of Eco Schools. Our three main focus areas are litter, Food and the Environment, and Water. Hold n Eco Schools Green Flag, which is a fantastic honour. We hope to achieve our second Green Flag during this school year.
