Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Participate in teaching for Undergraduate students.
  • Ensuring delivery of research-informed teaching that adheres to current curricular requirements, whilst also developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
  • Supervise & facilitate the academic work of students including undergraduate Medical and, where capacity allows, BSc students.
  • Carry out work associated with MBBCh, PGT & BSc assessments (i.e. the setting and marking of papers and providing constructive feedback to students).
  • Provide pastoral care and academic support by acting as both an Academic Mentor for MBBCh students and, where capacity allows, a Personal Tutor for BSc/PGT students.

Scholarship

  • Where possible, pro-actively undertake and lead appropriate educational research, pedagogical evaluation and scholarly activity,
  • Participate in national and international conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of one’s own scholarship and learn from others.
  • To enhance the standing of the School and University at local, national and international level through communication with local and wider public and stakeholder groups.

Leadership

  • Provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure areas of the secondary components of the MBBCh undergraduate course are organised and delivered effectively.
  • Be involved in strategic planning through the Programme lead and Executive Director/Head of School of Medical Sciences.
  • Ensure the continuous progression and evolution of the curriculum and its assessment
  • Improving skills and knowledge in learning and teaching pedagogy, assessment and feedback. e.g. to act as a mentor within the School’s Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education and Practice (PgCert MEP) programme, or any other similar educator development initiatives.

Qualifications/Training

  • Medical degree (or similarly equivalent healthcare qualification).
  • PGCertHE teaching qualification or equivalent, together with HEA Senior Fellowship recognition (or minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Senior Fellowship).
  • Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration
  • Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (or Academy of Medical Educators)
  • Substantial and significant teaching experience at undergraduate / postgraduate level, demonstrating teaching innovation in aspects of course development, design and delivery.
  • Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
  • Subject specialist knowledge in medical education
  • Knowledge of relevant Equality & Diversity policies as relating to staff and students within a University framework.
  • Outstanding communication and IT skills, to include the ability to present complex and conceptual basic science topics clearly and confidently to others, using high level skills and a range of media.
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral and academic support to students by appreciating the needs of individual learners and their circumstances.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in, and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School.
  • Evidence of creating inclusive/enabling teaching and learning environments for students.
  • Evidence of managing transition within an academic environment
  • Understanding of the local socio-economic and cultural landscape.
  • An ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
