A Community of Learners: How AIA Lusail Engages Parents, Teachers & Students

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Ms. Racha Hammoud, the Primary Principal of Arab International Academy – Lusail, to gain insights into her educational vision and the school’s approach to fostering student success and wellbeing. Ms. Hammoud shared her thoughts on various topics, including the school’s plans for the future, academic focus, challenges in education, student motivation, inclusivity, student stress and bullying, preparing students for life after graduation, parental and community involvement, teacher retention and growth opportunities, and the importance of after-school activities.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

In 2025, with the opening of our new campus, we aim to build a strong community where students, teachers, and parents can grow together. Our focus will be on fostering a deeper understanding of educational standards, values, and the principles embedded in the AIA’s mission statement.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and which new ideas are you pursuing?

Our academic focus each year is guided by the IB standards and the vision and mission of our school. We are committed to promoting dual language education and sustainability, as well as developing a ‘culture of thinking’ within the school. These principles guide our academic programs, preparing students not just for the next grade but for life beyond school.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

As technology and artificial intelligence continue to evolve, they challenge educators to rethink traditional teaching and learning methods. This reinforces our belief in an approach to education that goes beyond content knowledge, focusing instead on developing critical thinking, creativity, and deeper understanding. We view these changes as an opportunity to transform our educational systems and equip students with the skills they need for the future.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

At AIA Lusail, we use inquiry-based learning to engage students at every level. By fostering curiosity and encouraging critical thinking, we make learning relevant to their lives. By building strong, trusting relationships with students and making them feel supported and valued, they become more motivated to take ownership of their learning.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

Students’ well-being is one of the main aspects that distinguishes our school. We strive to create an environment where every student feels welcome and valued. We implement action plans that focus on building positive relationships and supporting social and emotional learning. We also embrace a student-centered approach that celebrates every student’s growth, offering differentiated learning and setting personalized goals to ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

We take a proactive approach to student well-being by having a dedicated well-being team that implements strategies to foster healthy, positive relationships. Regular well-being check-ins with students and parents provide us with valuable data to assess needs and adjust our strategies. This ongoing process ensures that we stay ahead of potential challenges and create a supportive, safe environment for all students.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

We are committed to lifelong learning in line with the IB philosophy. Our curriculum goes beyond foundational subject-specific knowledge and skills, focusing on the Approaches to Learning or ATL skills that prepare students for the world beyond school. These skills include critical thinking, collaboration, and self-management, which are essential for success in an ever-changing world.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

Parents and the community are essential partners in our educational journey. We actively engage them in their children’s learning through practices like inviting guest speakers, utilizing community expertise, and involving parents in the school’s decision-making process. Our Parent Council plays a key role in strengthening the connection between home and school, ensuring that our school remains responsive to the needs of our community.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

Creating a supportive, collaborative, and professional environment is key to attracting and retaining great teachers. We prioritize ongoing professional development, where teachers have the opportunity to grow and share best practices. Teachers’ well-being is central to our school values, ensuring they feel supported both personally and professionally.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

We are committed to the professional growth of our educators, which includes providing opportunities for teachers to take on leadership roles. Our school’s coaching model and continuous professional learning activities empower them to lead initiatives, collaborate with peers, and influence positive change within the school community.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

Any after-school activity that sparks a student’s passion and challenges them to think creatively will have the biggest impact. Whether it’s the arts, sports, or academic clubs, these activities encourage students to pursue originality, build resilience, and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. What matters most is that students are engaged in something that excites them and pushes them to grow beyond their comfort zones.

12. As a Principal, what is your definition of success?

Success is when every member of the school community feels safe, valued, and motivated to do their best. It’s about fostering an environment where individuals feel they belong and have the support they need to reach their full potential.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

Achievement lies not in perfection but in the courage to learn, grow, and make a positive impact on those around us.
