Cornerstone is not just another school. In 1986 a visionary team of parents and educators caught sight of how a Christ centred education could deeply impact our region. What began with 17 students and a single teacher has now flourished into a school rich in heritage that has had thousands of students impacted by our unique form of education.
Our Christian-based values are planted into every part of a Cornerstone Education. The Christian message is woven into every learning area by teachers who all are firmly grounded in their own faith. It’s not just a philosophy that we lightly adhere to, but, as our name states, it is our cornerstone.
‘My greatest hope for our graduates at Cornerstone, is that they realise God has given them gifts and talents, and that they will reach for, and achieve their personal potential. Coming to a deep acceptance and understanding of all they can be with God at the heart of their lives is a great motivator for me in my leadership at the College’
The Cornerstone experience is one where education is taken seriously. Our NAPLAN and ATAR results speak for themselves. What is less measurable, but no less real, is the way our students are challenged to engage with, critique, and then transform the world around them. The development of each child’s character is as important to us as their academic results. From the enrichment of character comes the ability to move beyond the walls of Cornerstone and serve and enhance the lives of others. It is our God-inspired hope to cultivate our children to become young men and women who make a difference in their world.
MISSION To enable our students to be immersed and engaged in up-to-date curriculum. To explore, understand and critique everything with a Christian worldview. To identify and develop students’ unique God-given talents and plan for their life. To develop faith in Jesus Christ, and actively pursue Godly wisdom for life. To identify and develop students’ unique God-given talents and plan for their life. To possess confidence, integrity, humility, discipline and resilience. To demonstrate love, compassion, respect and purity. To encourage enthusiasm and perseverance in learning. To develop a mind-set in students to challenge their own limits. To be responsible role-models in our community. To make a positive difference in the lives of others.
ur focus is Christ-centered student learning. We strive to live out and model biblical values daily. Education is seen through the lens of a Christian world view. Students are guided to see themselves as Jesus sees them and encouraged to be that person. Teachers intentionally build relationships with their students to provide a safe and secure learning environment. When students feel safe they are able to participate in the engaging and challenging activities teachers provide as they feel able to take risks in their learning.
We believe students should clearly know what they are learning, how to be successful in that learning and be supported by feedback from the teacher. Teaching may be explicit as well as consolidating knowledge and skills. At Cornerstone we care as much about character as academic achievement. Character development is essential if our students are to be successful learners and valued citizens of the future. We encourage our students to be outward looking and to serve the community when opportunities arise. We may do this through fundraising (e.g Market Day), attendance at community events (e.g. ANZAC Day) or providing a community service (e.g. visiting elderly residents in care facilities).
Providing adequate support for our students is a priority at Cornerstone. As such we have a dedicated Learning Support Centre that has the capacity to work intensively with small groups of students. Our Learning and Support Coordinator works collaboratively with teachers to develop individual education plans with teachers referring students for academic testing as they deem necessary.
The services of the School Psychologist (through the Association of Independant Schools in WA) and a Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist (Naturaliste Community Health Centre) are also called in to consult, assess and provide programs and suggestions for students who are at educational risk. The College has also employed Education Assistants (EAs) who are working throughout the primary school in Busselton, including our Early Learning Centre.
