Curro Hazeldean is an independent school situated in Silver Lakes, Pretoria. This combined, parallel-medium school (Afrikaans and English) offers outstanding education to learners from Group 2 (in the Castle) to Grade 12.
Curro Hazeldean is registered with the Gauteng Department of Education and therefore offers the national curriculum as prescribed by the national Department of Education. The CCMD prescribes enrichment content that enhances the curriculum in such a way that our learners can have fun while learning to be 21st-century learners. We are registered with the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).
Teaching is provided in classes with controlled sizes by qualified and committed educators. Our learners are exposed to a quality learning programme in the fields of academics, sport and culture within which they can grow and develop their own, individual abilities.
In these grades the focus is on perceptual development, exposure to relevant content, skills and knowledge which are required for further learning. We offer a vibrant, invitational atmosphere where the learners enjoy coming to school and where they acquire a love for learning that will sustain them throughout their school years. We acknowledge the potential in each learner to reach optimum ability; therefore, there is less emphasis on competitiveness and more emphasis on individual achievement. We create opportunities for personal growth in independence and responsibility so that learners can take up the challenge of being personally responsible and accountable fortheir actions in the intermediate phase.
In the intermediate phase, the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thought and independent work. Application of skills and concepts is also a focus area this phase. This phase aims to prepare learners for the senior phase in the high school. We promote creativity and critical thinking by encouraging children to make their own choices within well-established boundaries.
We aim to embrace 21st-century learning by incorporating the use of tablets in our classrooms. We currently raise children who are ‘digital natives’. By embracing innovative technology into our schools, we are speaking the language our learners understand.Curriculum English or Afrikaans Home Language, English or Afrikaans First Additional Language, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Robotics, Social Sciences, Art, Life Skills, Physical Education, Information Technology, Bible Studies, Natural Sciences (Grade 7), Creative Arts (Grade 7), Life Orientation (Grade 7), Economic and Management Sciences (Grade 7) and Readers for Leaders.
Participation in sport and the role of physical development are based on the ethos of Curro Hazeldean. This is to ensure that all learners are educated in totality and to create opportunities as far as possible for each learner to develop as an individual. It is therefore important that learners are encouraged to participate in sport.
Culture is one of the foundational pillars of developing a well-balanced learner. At Curro Hazeldean, learners are offered the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of cultural activities, from choir to drama. In this way, learners can develop a love for art, regardless of their abilities in sport or academics.
