Doreen Fyfe was born in 1919 in Albany, Western Australia. She was two when her parents moved to a Group Settlement farm outside Margaret River and only four when they took work opening up transport routes in the southwest forests. Little Doreen was not able to enrol in primary school until she was eight, and was unable to go to high school. This meant she could not realize her dream of training to be a nurse. However, during WWII she volunteered to train with the Nursing Division which brought her close to her dream. Doreen always believed in the importance of education. Her settling-in scholarship will assist students from country WA to settle into studying nursing at Curtin in Perth.
