Edron Academy

The Edron Academy (EL Colegio Britanico, A.C.) is the leading British-Mexican school in the country. With over a thousand pupils, it is a co-educational school, from pre-nursery to eighteen years old, committed to a modern and progressive education. We shape the leaders of tomorrow.

It is a not-for-profit school where all funds support pupil learning. Founded in 1963, by Edward Foulkes and Ronald Stech, the school was established with a unique vision: to create a learning community in which every child was safe, happy and successful. The vision lives on today, in the form of our Edron Values.

Over the years, the School has built on these fundamental values, whilst adapting the change and expansion. In 1985, it moved from San Angel to its present site in a pleasant residential area, close to the forested hills of Desierto de los Leones. It achieved its bi-cultural status at this time and was incorporated within the Mexican Ministry of Education.

In 1995, Edron became an IB World School as it established an approved programme of IB Diploma subjects for Sixth Form study to complement its extensive provision of IGCSE subjects at Key Stage 4.Accredited by the Council of British International School (COBIS) and inspected by the Independent Schools´ Inspectorate (ISI), the Edron Academy is proud of its past, focused on its present and ambitious about its future.

Welcome to the Lower School section of The Edron Academy Webpage. I hope that you are able to use these pages to understand some of the wonderful work that takes place here at the school and learn a little about what a wonderful place The Edron Academy is to study.

Our aim is for our students to be confident, self-assured but respectful, demonstrating a love of learning and hard work whilst enjoying the challenge of new studies. We also want students to feel secure and valued by all members of the school community. This is achieved through a holistic approach that develops the whole child and not purely focusing on academic achievements.

Each year group has a maximum class size of twenty four students in the primary school and eighteen in the Kinder school. Each class has both an English and Spanish speaking teacher.

As a bi-cultural school, the children work with both the Mexican SEP curriculum and the National Curriculum for England and Wales. The children are taught using a cross-curricular approach, which means that English skills are taught through topics such as ´Ancient Civilisations´ or ´Inventors´. This method ensures learning in context and generates a great deal of enthusiasm, providing opportunities for writing, mathematics and other subjects.

Key Stage 3 is a time where students study a wide range of subjects from the British National Curriculum and the Mexican SEP Curriculum. Learning is usually enquiry based and various projects will be undertaken. We have taken the opportunity to introduce Higher Performance Learning and promote the values of a growth mindset. There are also opportunities for interdisciplinary topics.

At IGCSE students study core subjects such as Maths, Science, English and Spanish plus elective subjects ranging from Music, Drama and Art to Economics, Sociology or French. There is an element of choice which allows for deeper study in to specific academic areas. The IGCSE programme culminates in Year 11 with a series of exams and coursework submissions. Students must pass at least 5 IGCSEs to be admitted in to the IB programme in Year 12. Each year students nervously await their results in mid-August and our current pass rate for 5 IGCSE exam is at 90%.

The Bilingual IB Diploma is an academically challenging programme that is fantastic preparation for University entrance. Our students must take 6 subjects including English, Spanish, a Social Science, Natural Science, Maths and a further elective subject. Students must also complete a 4,000-word essay on a topic of their choice plus make an oral presentation and a 1,600 word essay on Theory of Knowledge. They must also take part in sustained Creativitiy, Activity and Service activities.
