Embracing Transformation: The Future of Education in the UAE

By Sahar Cooper, Chief Executive Officer of Aldar Education

When I started school, decades ago, education was more traditional, teacher-centred approach with limited access to information and technology. Tests and exams, used to evaluate students’ knowledge and understanding of the material taught, were standardised and often emphasised rote memorisation and regurgitation of facts.

And like everything else, advancement in technology has helped change education and we saw a shift towards more technology-enabled, student-centred, and globally oriented approaches.

This change was significantly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic when slow adopters had no other choice. The pandemic normalised the use of online learning platforms, video conferencing tools, and digital resources as primary modes of instruction. There’s been a renewed focus on teacher professional development to enhance digital literacy skills. There has also been focus on the importance of supporting the social-emotional well-being of students, highlighting the need for resilience, adaptability, and innovation in education systems worldwide.

In the UAE, we have seen similar trends. But after the pandemic the future of education is very possibly focused on lifelong, flexible, and skill-based learning.

Imagine a world where in the classroom students spend part of their day focusing on social interactions, having discussions on global key issues, peer learning and engaging with AI, each learning individually – teachers are guides in this collaborative process rather than the sole role they play in the classroom today. Imagine an education that extends beyond traditional schooling to encompass continuous skill development and upskilling throughout one’s life. This is the future, and we are not far from it.

The UAE is arguably the world’s largest international school market, and ensuring the quality of the educational journey for all stakeholders is now more important than ever. No longer is the focus solely on addressing supply challenges; rather, there is a resolute shift towards prioritising high quality, personalised educational experiences tailored to individual student needs, interests, and learning styles. Adaptive learning algorithms, data analytics, and artificial intelligence will play a significant role in delivering customised instruction and assessment. But we also need to integrate localisation, sustainability, and community engagement to ensure successful implementation.

Fifteen point five percent of the UAE’s total federal budget last year was allocated to the education sector, showing a clear commitment to this transformative journey. This is a strategic move to bring the future of education sooner than later, to prepare the leaders of tomorrow as early as possible

It is important to remember that technology not only enhances the educational experience for students but also helps evolves the role of teachers from traditional instructors to facilitators, mentors, and learning coaches. Teachers will leverage technology to personalise instruction, facilitate collaborative learning experiences, and provide individualised support to students. Parents can equally benefit from real-time updates on academic progress and actively participate in their child’s experience as well as work with educators to help the process.

Localising education is crucial in order to preserve the UAE’s cultural heritage while aligning with global educational standards. As education providers, it is our responsibility to safeguard the UAE’s traditions, values and language by infusing international curricula with cultural nuances that resonate with the diversity of our society. Cultural sensitivity and adaptability are critical now for educators within today’s diverse classrooms – being inclusive in a learning environment will let every child feel valued and understood.

The intersection of education and sustainability is a shift that could shape the future of individuals and societies on a global scale. Sustainability in education is no longer a niche topic and has become critical in preparing students for the challenges and responsibilities they will encounter in an increasingly interconnected world. By integrating sustainability principles into curriculums, we empower students to become conscientious global citizens equipped to address pressing environmental, social, and economic issues.

And finally, central to future quality education is a thriving community. Creating a quality educational experience is intrinsically linked to the well-being and prosperity of communities. Through strong community partnerships and engagement, educational institutions can create holistic learning environments that extend beyond the classroom. With well-built, well-planned and thought-out initiatives, such as community outreach programmes and service-learning projects, students develop empathy, resilience, and a sense of social responsibility, enriching their educational journey and contributing positively to society.

I believe by embracing technology, localisation, sustainability, and community engagement, we can pave a path towards a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their potential.
