Chartered by the Maine legislature in 1823, Foxcroft Academy was established as an independent high school just a few years after the incorporation of the town of Foxcroft itself. A remarkable history has followed. From modest beginnings in a wood frame building for which the town appropriated $100, the Academy now occupies a 125-acre campus with a full complement of academic, athletic, and residential facilities. Today more than 300 day students are enrolled from surrounding towns, including Dover-Foxcroft, Sebec, Charleston, Bowerbank, Monson, and Harmony.

We matriculate an additional 100 international students hailing from Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam. This diverse community of students integrate to become informed and active global citizens.

Foxcroft Academy may have a long and storied history, but we are also very much a school on the move. A lot has changed at the Academy over the past five years. In academics, we have become the first high school in Maine to implement a 1-to-1 iPad initiative, have reinforced our standard-based learning practices by adopting PowerSchool, and have enhanced our curriculum by giving our talented and creative faculty the freedom to develop a great variety of new academic offerings, including 25 Visual and Performing Arts courses and 15 offerings in Technical Education. We also continue to fill all of our allotted slots at Tri-County Technical Center, a regional high school program providing occupational preparation courses such as Commercial Truck Driving, Computer Systems Repair, Criminal Justice, and Health Occupations.

In campus news, we’ve built a second beautiful dorm on campus (enabling us to now house up to 96 students right here on FA grounds), resurfaced our track, added the Mary Kammerer Fittig LCD Sign, finished the Burns-Johnson Tennis Complex, and in 2015 completed construction of the Mary Kammerer Fittig Humanities Wing, which adds two state-of-the-art classrooms to campus and connects the main academic building with the Industrial Arts center.

Foxcroft Academy’s purpose is the same today as it was when the school opened to prepare all students for “the great duties of life”. Much has changed in FA’s history, and as we enter the 21st century, we recognize that the vast majority of our students will require education beyond their time in high school in order to find success later in life. To that end, the Academy’s goal is to provide all students with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success in post-secondary education.

While some students may choose not to continue their education, our commitment is to maintain an academic program that makes college an option for every graduate of Foxcroft Academy. Our standards-based curriculum and grading system (explained in detail below) was developed in the late 1990s and implemented for the Class of 2004, and enhances our ability to achieve our long-standing goal of preparing students for life-long learning and success.
