Founded in 1789, Georgetown Preparatory School is America’s oldest Catholic boarding and day school for young men in grades 9 through 12, and the only Jesuit boarding school in the country. Situated on 90 acres in suburban Washington, D.C., Prep's mission is to form men of competence, conscience, commitment and compassion; men of faith and men for others.
The school is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education and Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Prep is also a member of several independent school associations, including The Jesuit Schools Network and The Association of Boarding Schools. Georgetown Prep is part of a rich heritage of Jesuit education – one that began in 1789 when Archbishop John Carroll, the first bishop of Baltimore, founded his Academy on the Patowmack.
Since then, the vision for Jesuit education has expanded and is now shared by more than 50 other Jesuit high schools in the United States. As a Catholic school, Prep helps young men to grow in their faith and understanding of the teachings of the Church and to learn to put their faith into action in the service of others. We welcome students of all faiths, believing that conscious reflection on one’s faith, whatever it may be, leads to spiritual maturity and a commitment to serve others. Jesuit education centers on the education of the whole person: mind, spirit and body. This is accomplished through cura personalis (Latin for personalized care and concern for the individual) and through a holistic curriculum.
Georgetown Prep’s rigorous liberal arts curriculum is deeply rooted in Jesuit educational principles that go back to the 16th century - intellectual excellence, reflection, and personal responsibility. Georgetown Prep’s small class sizes, faculty involvement, and low student-to-teacher ratio foster an atmosphere of personal attention for every student. The close relationships that develop between students and faculty encourage learning that is meaningful and relevant.
Georgetown Prep offers 24 Advanced Placement courses, and our students each take an average of four AP classes, with more than 80 percent receiving college credit. A range of electives introduces many students to new subject areas and allows others to pursue long-held passions. The goal of our thoughtfully planned curriculum and intensive individual attention is to provide the very best college preparation possible.
When classes end at 3:00 p.m., the day’s activities are far from finished. The energy level stays high as the campus fills with the sights and sounds of debate, music, drama, creative arts, and ping-pong. There are over 20 extracurricular activities and clubs. We even have our own fully-equipped recording studio. Any student who can’t find exactly the activity he’s looking for is welcome to take the initiative and start a new club.
