Glenthorne High School is a thriving 11-19 mixed comprehensive Academy with 1,574 pupils, of whom 300 are in the 6th Form. We are an outstanding national Teaching School with a focus on high quality teacher training and a specialism in the arts.

We are a heavily oversubscribed, highly successful school with a long and rich history in the local community. The school was founded on the Glastonbury Road site in 1933. It moved to the Sutton Common Road site in 1958. At this time, it was called Sutton Common County Secondary Girls’ School; a small girls’ school for less than 400 pupils. It changed its name to Glenthorne in 1982 and it wasn’t until 1993 that it became co-educational. In 2018, we will celebrate our Diamond Jubilee.

"Achievement for All” is our motto and guiding principle. We have established an achievement culture in which every single pupil is encouraged to succeed. We aim to develop each individual’s talent and release each individual’s unique potential. We are an inclusive school and strive to meet the needs of all pupils across the ability spectrum.

Our pupils have benefited from the academic rigour and wealth of opportunity to go on to top universities, including Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities. Just this year, over 100 of our students went to university: to Cambridge, Imperial, King’s, Warwick, Sheffield, Oxford, UCL, Birmingham and Nottingham for example, to study a range of subjects including medicine, engineering, maths, the sciences and politics.

We believe in traditional values and high expectations. We promote a structured learning environment with an emphasis on the importance of homework. We expect high standards of behaviour, excellent attendance and positive attitudes. We have a traditional approach to discipline with zero tolerance of disruption and we encourage courtesy, respect, consideration for others, punctuality and a pride in the uniform of the school. We encourage all our pupils to contribute to the local community and to remember those less fortunate and we have a rich tradition of charity fundraising at the school.

Pupils at Glenthorne welcome the security of clearly defined boundaries. All our pupils know exactly what is expected of them and that rules will be enforced consistently. As such, it is important that rules, strategies and systems are clearly understood by all members of the school community and that they are applied consistently. With this in mind, our behaviour policy clearly outlines the expectations that are laid out for all pupils.

Glenthorne High School has a long standing tradition of offering high quality enrichment opportunities and activities in addition to the curriculum. These activities are an important and exciting feature of school life and contribute enormously to our pupils’ social, moral, spiritual and academic development.

Im in glenthorne and i enjoy it. its a bit strict and some teachers are very strict and some very kind and 45 min detention for the smallest things. but apart from that the school is good it really helps you with your arts!

I genuinely believe this school is a great one. I realized just how much teachers dedicate their time and effort into helping students understand, in different, unique and more fun ways
