Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarships (GDES) are based on merit and offered to incoming full-time thesis-based master’s and doctoral students at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Students who have submitted a complete admission application by the date indicated for each admission period will be automatically considered for this scholarship.

Evaluation Criteria
Graduate programs make recommendations to the College of Graduate Studies

Application Procedures

  • All applicants that have submitted a complete admission application by the appropriate deadline are automatically considered for the scholarship. No additional application is required
  • Students are not able to update or make changes to their admission application for the purpose of this scholarship

Nomination Procedures

  • GDES funding is allocated to graduate programs annually
  • The College of Graduate Studies highly recommends that graduate programs utilize the GDES for effective recruitment of excellent students
  • For the September admission period, priority is given to students that have completed their applications by January 31st of each year
  • Graduate programs review and evaluate each incoming admission application that has been submitted by the applicable deadline date
  • Graduate programs inform the College of Graduate Studies of which students have been nominated to receive a GDES
  • Graduate programs may allocate the awards over the course of three rounds:
    • Round one: offers are made to the top-ranked student(s) for the May admission period
    • Round two: offers are made to the top-ranked student(s) for the September admission period
    • Round three: offers are made to the top-ranked student(s) for the January admission period
  • Only successful applicants are notified

Conditions For Award Holders

  • Satisfactory Progress
    • Award holders must maintain satisfactory progress in their program of study and remain registered as a full-time student for each term of the scholarship payment. If the College of Graduate Studies is notified of a student’s unsatisfactory progress, the College of Graduate Studies reserves the right to cancel a Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship
  • Deferrals
    • Students are able to defer a GDES provided it is awarded within the same fiscal year.

*A student may be granted special permission to defer to May if the nominating program permits. In this case, the nominating program must agree to maintain the financial commitment to the student for the following funding year

  • Leave of Absence
    • Students granted a leave of absence retain the full value of any university graduate fellowship or other award whose terms and conditions are established by the College of Graduate Studies. An award will be suspended at the onset of the leave, and reinstated at the termination of the leave period, provided the student returns to full-time study within the same fiscal year
  • Transfer to Another Area of Study
    • If a scholarship holder transfers out of the program that nominated them for the fellowship, the student may retain the full scholarship payment only if both programs are in agreement
  • Withdrawals
    • If a scholarship holder withdraws from their program of study, the funding received during the term for which the withdrawal is processed will be recovered by the College of Graduate Studies and returned to the nominating program for further allocation
